Need a new motor?

Just had my 2010 F150 in for a loud knocking noise when the truck has warmed up in drive and rpm up to about 800. I can't hear the noise when I disconnect the passenger side vtc seleniod. The Tech who worked on it has recommended replacing the motor. His troubleshooting on the ticket says he removed the coil from the number 4 cylinder and the noise he hears goes away. Any advice on this I just can't see that the motor is bad.

Nobody worth their salt would say change out engine without opening it up for inspection. Doesn't matter if they are right or wrong, just good practice.

And besides that, engines can be repaired and rebuilt. Don't necessarily need to spend tons of your own money on a new crate engine. Unless the engine is under warranty, then get whatever you possibly can out of the event.

Hi Steve680,

Did you have your truck serviced at a Ford Dealership? How many miles do you have on it? I'll do some digging and see what I can do to help.

I'm assuming it's a 5.4? How many miles on it? Oil change intervals? Did you happen to remove the passenger side valve cover for inspection?

Does it sound like a rocker type noise? Or a bottom end knock?(if you know the difference) I have done a few trucks that needed rockers, lifters, camshaft, and phaser on the passenger side only with success.

2010 F-150

My truck is 2010 F-150 with about 85,000 miles on it. It's has a 4.6 3v motor in it and I had checked at A ford dealership in Alexandria, KY. I bought it used with about 60,000 miles on it and have had the oil changed about every 5000 miles. I don't know the difference between the different knocking sounds, I'm just skeptical about a knew motor when the noise goes away when I disconnect the vtc selenoid. Just a further note, I asked the same dealership to check for the noise about a month ago when I had the oil changed and they noted that all they heard were the injectors.

Hi Steve680,

I'll move this up the chain to your regional customer service manager (CSM) so they can help. To get the ball rolling, send me a PM with your full name, best daytime phone number, VIN, current mileage, and servicing dealership. I"ll get this into the CSM's hands.

^^The best help you're gonna get here. Me personally, I'm not a fan of the 4.6/5.4, I still own one too. If you're under warranty, the Tech is doing you a favor IMO.

This is what I was referring too:

Well, got a second opinion on my motor. Needs a new one. They are gonna put in a Jasper. I'll hope for the best. Mechanic said the lobs on the cam shaft were wearing down as well as a couple other things. Guess I should apologize to the dealership, although the second guy is gonna do the work for about 2000.00 less.

Well that sucks but, you'll come out with a nice warranty and a nice rebuilt product that you can depend on.
