My front seal on my compressor is leaking in my 93 2.3L 5spd Ranger. Since I am still R-12, I figured this would be a good time to swap in a new compressor AND do the retrofit to 134a.
I took my truck to a shop here in austin and they recommended me replacing the following parts(for the bargain price of $1295)
Compressor
Accumultor
Hose Assymbly
Liquid Line
Orfice Tube
I am going to buy the parts myself and have an ac auto mechanic friend install them instead. My question is: what is the "hose assmebly" To add, on my Ranger, it looks like I have an accumultor(by passenger side firewall) and a dryer(on the hose going in the direction to the radiator). Is that right? I have both?
I think your Ranger is a poor canidate for the conversion unless you install a larger condenser. Go to the below forums and search the posts on converting your truck. You'll learn a lot before you do an expensive conversion and find it won't cool.
I have read of replacing the condensor as well during the conversion. I guess these shops do so many of these retrofits that they do not care about the size of the condensor of an R-12 system compared to a R-134a setup.
Without seeing it I would only be guessing but a common hose to fail is the manifold hose assembly. Some hoses are part of the accumulator on factory systems as well, which would be the suction line. For the amount of money quoted you can probably get the whole job done in R12 at the dealer. R134 often requires a new condenser, and different pressure switches and sometimes different lines and accumulator.
