Lift & tire sizes

Looking for some help here. Wife wants new wheels. She's got a 4 1/2" lift up front and is currently running 35 x 12.5 tires. I believe the tires are 10" with a 4.5" backspacing. Wheels she's looking at are 17 x 9 with a -12mm offset.

If we go with the same size wheels, will the new tires make anything look different? Stick out less or further? Any ideas about rubbing? No rubbing currently.

She'd like to go with a taller tire too, but I'll have to check to see how much clearance she's currently got at wheel lock. Then if I can figure out how new vs. old compare maybe I can figure that out unless anyone is running bigger tires with the same lift.

Ive got a 4.5" lift. A 35" or 315/75 is the biggest tire I can fit. Some brands rub on the inner drivers side wheel well skirt while turning hard left and some brands don't. This is pretty common. You can pull the skirt in a little to keep it from rubbing there.
I also had to trim my air dam down to clear a 315/75.

What offset and backspacing do you have on your wheels? She doesn't have any issues with rubbing currently. She did at the stock height with 285's .

Im not 100% sure on the offset/backspacing. Ive bought the wheels 10 or so years ago. I would need to measure it but I want to say it is stock. The 315/75 16s rubbed worse with my stock 8" wide wheels than it does with 10".

Well it looks like unless I change the backspacing and stick the tires out further, larger tires are a no go unless she decides she can live with not turning the wheel all the way. Only about 3/4" of clearance at the springs.

Chris, I have 33" tires (305/70 R16) with 10" wide rims (I'll double check the rims) & 4 1/2" back spacing. No rubbing at all with the 3 1/2" lift.

nope - I was wrong. They are 8" not 10".

The rims I put on with 305/70 R16 tires:

Wheel Size: 16x8
8 on 170 Bolt Pattern
Offset: 0
Backspace: 4.5
Max Load: 3600
Finish: Triple Chrome Plated

ATX Wheels Part W/P18868087200 - AX188 Ledge, 16x8 with 8 on 170 Bolt Pattern - Triple Chrome Plated - 4 Wheel Parts

Thanks for checking Rich. I still need to get around to pulling one of her tires off to verify the backspace dimension.

Just haven't been in too big a hurry since doing that will lead to spending money on wheels.

From what Cary (OBSWIZ) told me when I was doing the suspension & wheels on my Excursion - back spacing needed to be 4 1/2" + or - 1/8" for full turn clearance.

I remember when it came to choosing rims and tires - it was one big headache! Lots of money for each and basically no return after u got e'm dirty.

I haven't heard that name in a while, but if that's what he said, I guess I don't need to mess with measuring mine. Unless he was talking about your 33's and we're running 35's.

Give him a call, e-mail, or a PM. He's got the 35's on his wife's Excursion IIRC.......

I run 35x12.50-17 MT on 17x10 with 4.5" backspace. I had to pull the drivers side inner fender back a little. That's with 3.5" level.

315 70-17 AT on the same rims did not rub.

Long time no see Scott.

That's strange, because I believe she's got 4.5" backspacing and is currently running 35 x 12.5 x 17 Nittos with no rubbing issues on the fenderwell.

She did have rubbing issues there when running 285's without the lift.

Hey Chris. I'm usually here a few times a week, just don't post much anymore.

Given more thought I think my backspace is 4", not 4.5". So they stick out a little further.
