Building an automatic 302 (69' F100 4x4)

I currently am in possession of a Ford 302 5.0 engine. Engine is mostly complete but has been sitting outside of a vehicle for roughly a year. I am unaware of the year / model of 302. I do have a engine serial code, but am unsure how to "decode" it. A buddy of mine and I plan on rebuilding the engine. We plan on using mostly stock parts aside from an aluminum intake manifold, after-market air cleaner, headers and a 4-barrel Edelbrock carburetor.

Our initial plan was to rebuild the engine and purchase a Falcon shell to drop it in. As of rite now my buddy's current FE 390 is beginning to show its age and give him numerous amounts of problems. The FE 390 is being pulled and he is not looking to rebuild it. He is looking for an engine that will get better mileage as his truck is nothing but a daily driver. He does no towing with his truck. Nothing except casual city / highway driving. He is not looking for a performance / race engine.

My question is whether or not a 302 would be able to move a 69 F100 4x4 without any issues? Like I said, not looking for performance / towing / etc. Just something reliable that can move the truck around with no issues.

What transmission options are we open to? Is a C6 able to mate to a small block? We are looking for something automatic with 4x4 capabilities.

Any information is much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Ryan

As a side note:

Will add photos of the engine and the progress we make over-time. I will also provide the serial number to engine if anyone could provide some more information on the engine. If you guys seem to think the 302 would not work in the truck, it is going to be built either way. If we can't use it in a truck, we will find something to drop it in. :-)

Starting tomorrow I am going to begin disassembling the engine. Once I get a look at the inside I will determine what machine work will need to be done.

There is a C6 model that fits 302 & 351 C/W. Even a well built C4 would be ok.

C4 will be fine even in stock form. As for the truck, yeah a 302 will be fine. It was after all, a factory installed engine in that truck.

For more info/ support, I suggest going to the 1967-1972 forum. Lots of us there who can answer all your questions.
