Thank you Ross and Fred for the advice. I will post pictures of the carb when I get it taken apart and start the rebuild. Hopefully things go smoothly, fingers crossed

Well finally got the carb apart tonight. Started with the throttle body. As I was cleaning it I noticed a piece that broke off the casting, seen in the last photo. Do you guys think this will hurt anything? Also, is it possible to get the screws out of the throttle plates? I'd like to clean those plates and the bores as well.

This is the damage I am talking about

Oh also thought I would throw in what I got done over christmas break. I cleaned and painted the transmission, I need to get the paint off the splines though. Also need to paint the shifter. As for the steering gearbox I got that taken apart and cleaned. Painted it red because I think it will look pretty when I pop the hood at a car show, just a little detail I know is there! I need a new steering shaft, damaged the splines on the end taking off the steering wheel.

Will look good hooked up to the red flathead

I don't see anything broken on your base casting, that is what most look like. I do not recommend removing the throttle plates. If you soak the base in carburetor cleaner it all gets nice and clean still assembled. The little screws that hold the plates in were peened at the factory and are a pain to remove & install. You gain very little, if anything, by taking them out.

Another tip: I have a flat screwdriver that I ground the side down so it just fits through those holes to remove the main jets with.

Thank you for the input. I did just what you said this morning, throttle body cleaned up great. I had a flathead screwdriver that worked great for the main jets, they are out right now. I am cleaning up the carb body right now.

White chalk in fuel bowl

Okay so I have been cleaning my fuel bowl and it is white and chalky. Is this corrosion from gas? I can't seem to get it removed and it keeps on flaking. Is my carb shot?

The white stuff is partially from alcohol in the gas. Don't need to get 100%, just do as best as you can.

An important place to spend some time cleaning is the tubes in the venturi bars. See below, they are like a tube-in-a-tube, and can get plugged.

These are slightly different than yours, difference is insignificant

PS can you post a picture of the threaded part of the power valve that came in your kit?

Screw your new PV into the bowl (with the gasket on), and put the throttle section against the bowl (with no gasket). Make sure the PV doesn't stick down so far that the throttle section can't seat against the bowl. Where did you get your rebuild kit? Does it say who made it?

Ross, I installed the PV and it fits fine. As far as the rebuild kit I got it from MAC's and and I am not sure who makes it.

Here is a link: Carb rebuild Kit

Engine is done

Well the flathead is finally done. Going to pick it up at the end of the week. She's a beauty, and I can't wait to here her fire up!

Paint is almost done

In the past year my dad and I have had body work done to the F3 and we recently got her painted. We went with a Massey Ferguson red for the cab and hood with black fenders and flatbed. The grill will be a dark gray similar to MF grey. The truck will come home this winter for me to get busy with brakes, wiring, trim, etc. The Flathead has a 4'' mercury crank, is bored 60 over, and has a mild cam to give her a nice lope Other than that the rest of the truck is stock. Digging through the forum I came across a thread someone started who was also interested in buying this truck. Kinda neat to see the transformation.

F3 buying advice

Also would anybody know of a good place to get some old school looking mud-flaps...possibly with the classic logo?

Edit: Also I realize we are missing engine mount pads. Will get that taken care of soon.

Is your truck SRW or DRW?

NAPA sells a cool looking mudflap in different sizes, like these and they are cheapest since you are advertising for them:

Google "Built Ford Tough mudflaps" to find these:
