Service replacement is potentially very good, but possibly not. Which service replacement is it?
The passenger side head is most difficult to read since a lot of stuff can be in the way. It will be in one of two places, as outlined in the link. If not between exhaust ports, which should be easy to see, it will be below the intake flange. A mirror and bright light help a lot, as well as cleaning it the best you can.

So it is an engine that has been swapped, possibly had parts swapped, and possibly rebuilt, with unknown mileage. It will be hard to gauge what performance you should expect as is and there is any number of reasons for it to be poor.

Well I have been driving the 64 for a while now and it works OK as long as I rev it quite a bit more than my 390 but still wont go up a hill at less than 3500 rpm. so the swap is looking like it may happen soon. one question I have is the difference in gearing between the t98 and the npr435. is there a big difference?

The only thing I like about my 292 is the cool sound the starter makes and the mint condition visually of the engine itself.

Its low on power and to much maintenance in both the amount of maintenance compared to a SBF and the difficulty of performing the maintenance.

If I don't sell it this year, I see a 5.0/C4 for a winter project.

The valve train is the only thing that is significantly different from a 5.0. If you have lots of issues there, then something is wrong. Otherwise, it's points, condenser, oil change, carb adjustments, timing checks, all things that a small block will require. I concede that the points and condenser area greater challenge to replace because of the distributor position but the maintenance in that area is no different. Valve check or adjustment is easy.

On my 292 the tranny cooling hardline must be removed to service the right side valve train. That means draining the system.

The valve cover will not come off with the cooling line in place.
