Life After Bulletproofing a 6.0

My 6.0 has 100,000 miles on it EGR Delete, new stock oil cooler at 70,000 miles, banks intercooler intake and intake manifold, and 4" turbo back exhaust. I am currently getitng 10.7 MPG on Nitto Trail Grapplers 35/12.5/17. Has not been studded and has always run stock tunes. I have an Edge Insight monitor.

My fuel mileage is dropping and I am looking at getting an SCT X4 tuner and then getting a mechanic to do the head stud job or to sell the truck for something more efficient. I really love my truck and my preference is to keep it but I need to get it up to the 15 MPG area to make that happen. I have found a million posts about doing the studs or just completing the studs but very few posts about the long term outcome after making that investment. I am not looking to build a sled puller or a race truck but I do want a peppy and relaible truck to last me a long time (300k miles +).

The question I have is how many of you have gone ahead and done the head studs and then had a reliable truck and been happy about that decison after the fact?

Head studs won't get you better mileage. More then likely you need to clean you EBP sensor and tube and your IAT2 sensor.

Have you corrected the speedo for the larger tires? If not you are getting better than 10.7 MPG. An SCT tuner will ask if you want to enter the tire size when you start the tuning process. Other things affecting the mileage are, how much time does it spend idling, type of driving ie: in town vs highway, winter blend fuel and how heavy you are on the skinny pedal.

Definitely figure out how different your odometer is with tall tires. My truck has 315/70's on it, giving about 5-6 mph difference above 50 mph. Testing against my GPS, if I get 100 miles on the trip odometer I have actually gone 111 miles. That adds up quick when figuring fuel economy.

My coolant temps run in the high 180's to low 190's and are always within 10 degrees of my oil temp since I did the new oil cooler.

The spedometer has not been adjusted for the new tires it still thinks im running 265/70/17 which is 31.6" in diameter so 4.4" smaller than my current tires. Is there a way to do this without the SCT Tuner or do you need that to make this adjustment?

Why would cleaning these sensors affect fuel mileage? Also is the blue spring upgrade something I should look into doing?

Gummed up sensors will give bad feedback and cause it to give more fuel then needed. I recommend the Blue Spring upgrade, it boosts the fuel pressure somewhere around 10 psi.

More importantly, it prevents low pressure from killing your injectors. Anything less than 45 psi is not good, the spring should boost the pressure to above 50.

High rolling resistance tires, and a lift(?) always = dropped fuel economy. Its just the plain physics of increased drag from the ground and the wind.

This question has been asked for years in the forums and some guys buy a second economy car, some return their rig to stock, and some accept it as it is and live with it.

I bought an old Saturn to commute to work with (36-41MPG) which is double what my stock F250 gets on the commute (17-19 MPG). Best part is, I REALLY enjoy my truck on my days off now, and I'm only putting 1/4 the miles on it I used to.

I should break even on the investment in the Saturn sometime this year.
