Does a 2010 F250 6.4L use DEF like a 2011 6.7L does?

The newer setup, with DEF still has a DPF filter along with EGR in the engine but since the tier 4 emissions the 6.7 complies with is way stricter than the tier 3 of the era of the Navistar built 6.4 it takes more stuff to pass emissions testing. The DEF is sprayed into exhaust to have a chemical reaction with the NOx emissions and it changes it to straight nitrogen and water vapor. There is also a catilyst in system to aid with this chemical reaction. Lots of stuff going on these newer Diesel engines all in the name of reduced emissions. These are also the parts that tend to fail giving you greif and tend to be expensive to repair but all manufactures re in the same boat.

Just don't put it in the fuel tank on the 6.4, like I did... I was led to believe that it needed it in the tank since it didn't have a DEF tank yet. Of course, it crystalized, and destroyed the pumps, injectors, and everything else in the fuel system. Thank the gods for extended warranties (Safeco covered my mistake, comprehension and collision).

Glad it worked out though for sure. That would have been a hell of a repair bill if it came out of your pocket.
