Need suggestions...Had catastrophic internal failure and have chunks of bearings in the oil pan. 70,000 on odometer. Service manager not sure if Ford will warranty motor, (lack of lubrication) there is a back story. Flew to texas to buy from doge dealership, they changed oil prior to sell, broke down in Mississippi, drain plug fell out while parked (thank god), dumped all oil, repaired at ford dealership, changed out pan to new metal one...now 4,000 miles later pow... If the computer can sense contaminated def fluid, would it not shut the truck down for low oil pressure or at least a check engine or oil light? None of which happened, the motor just stopped in the middle of an intersection! Advice

 

Sounds like the seller has some liability here.

Isn't there a gauge for oil pressure?

Sounds like there may be a flood issue here.
How reputable is the dodge dealer? Did they buy at auction or take on a trade from original owner?

Truck was owned by rental company, serviced every 3-4 months, then sold to dealership, don't know beyond what info I got from car fax and cars.com in my search prior to buying. And yes, the my service manager wants me to call that dealership and start the fight. When the pan was replaced, there was no evidence of a leak while I was driving the 457 miles from texas to mississippi, no oil on undercarriage or rear axle. The plug just fell out while parked. And it's lasted 4,000 miles with no issues. When blew, just shut down, no oil light, check engine light, oil pressure good, turbo good. Was pulling my trailer going to a job.

 

What did the old plug look like? Was it all mangled like it had been through the wringer? Or did it look like new and seem like a fluke? Either way I dont see how ford could possibly warrenty it. I would be on the phone with that dodge dealer like asap! I can tell you that the early 6.7's did have a few engine failures. But it had to do with faulty exhaust valves. That wouldn't show by bearings in the oil pan.

 

Trying to clear this up in my mind.....

4000 miles ago you approached your truck in a parking lot and saw a 15+ quart puddle under it with the drain plug in the middle, truck was not running?



Or did he plug fall out while it was running....sitting in the parking lot and you shut if off when you saw the oil?

 

I replied to your other posting. The dealership service it for you. They did the shoddy work.


I would not be surprised if they did a wrong filter as well.


I would not be surprised if they put diesel in the def tank either.


Your claim should start there. If I was ford I would no warranty it.

 

Now, I am not a diesel expert, but since these engines have oil accuated injectors, isn't it impossible for a modern diesel engine to run without oil?

 

The truck was parked when the plug fell out, the tabs were broken because mechanic kept turning like regular threaded plug, only it's a 1/4 turn. Yes, sure looked like 15 quarts on ground but who knows.

 

Welcome to FTE, sucks that your truck broke. This is going to cost some $$$ to get running again. I have no idea who is at fault here, plenty of players in this story. Might consider talking to a lawyer.

 

This, and talk to your insurance company. They may pay for the repairs on your comprehensive, and then take up the fight for you.

With the 6.4 and 6.7 and high pressure common rail they went to piezo injectors which are controlled by the PCM.

 

I had one other thought. My local dealers all seem to offer a warranty for used cars. Typically 4 months and 12,000 miles seem common. Does the Dodge dealership you purchased this truck from offer any protection for you? In this case if they changed the oil and all the oil fell out, seems like a call back to them might help.

 

This is turning into a hornets nest. I would assume the dealership changed the oil as they paid ford to replace the oil pan and plug in mississippi. At dealership today to look at the carnage.. main bearing material in pan. also found a motor mount bolt missing, and rtv in areas that should have been gaskets. Service manager assumes motor had been pulled lately but there is no record of it. Nothing on fords records, car fax, or dealer records I was shown. Not too optimistic Ford will cover. So as a consumer purchasing a a newer vehicle, sticking the financial neck out for the warranty, I may be screwed, royally

 

Thanks for all the helpful info, it is very confusing and stressful. I took a leap and dumped all my resources on this. So far, taking it to corporate for decision, dealership purchased from will tell me to take a leap, so my corporate lawyer is on standby to assist. So now I have a 96 7.3 blown in the back yard, a 2011 6.7 blown at the dealership, driving my 91 5.8 L, this keeps up I'll be back in my 81 250 straight six manual....

 

Time to hire an attorney.
Warranty from Dodge dealer?
Have you analyzed the fluid in the def tank?
Sounds like you may need an "expert witness".
