2000 F.250 4x4 5.4l

I got kinda like a popping coming somewhere from my front end. I looked under it and on the passenger side where the axle goes into my wheel bearing assembly the knuckles are catching my lower ball joint enough it has rubbed a place on it. So my question is, could that where it could be coming from. And the actual axle is lose in the housing and right at the hub assembly. Is the bearing in the hub the only one that keeps it from moving or is there another one in the axle housing?
