wow that's a clean truck...

yea the 5.8 computer will work fine for that build, just make sure you use the right trans configuration, AND ignition module (black vs gray) from whatever truck you pick the computer from. with the air mods youre doing the 5.8 will probably be a better choice.

How would I determine this? I read the the ignition module is attached to the base of the distributor. Does the color of the module determine the compatibility?

Also since I'm using an 89 5.0 HO motor, would I reuse my F150 distributor or the HO motor's disti? Based on Conanski's advice to stay with the cam stock cam from the HO motor, the timing will be different than the stock F150.

I'm not sure whether any of these matters but if you can or anyone else can chime in with more details it would be much appreciated.

yea you just run the f150 dizzy and rearrange the firing order accordingly.

the ignition modules on these trucks were mounted on the distributor body, or remote mounted on the drivers side fender well. you need to know which one you have, and which one the donor computer matches. they are black or gray, if you have a gray you need to find a computer with gray module. if youre black, need a comp with black.

I thought all 87-91 trucks had the module on the dizzy and 92-96 got remote mounted ones. At least that is how it is on our trucks.

Im not sure definitively which years went from the dizzy to the fender, but some remote mounts were gray module, so that eec would still work if you had the Grey on the dizzy

I know my 92 and every other 92 I have seen has the gray one but I can't remember what our 93 F250 4x4 514 had.

I check mine on the 91 F150 and it is grey located on the distributor.

So to recap the build:

89 Mustang 5.0 HO engine
Got GT40 heads with F3ZE casting - planning to shave .020 for 9.5:1 CR
NEW - COMP 289-302-351W FORD MAGNUM RAIL TYPE ROLLER ROCKER ARMS 1.7 RATIO 3/8" STUD
Stock cam from the 5.0 HO engine if re-useable
Silvolite H3101 4.020 pistons
91 351W ECU (per 89F2urd)
Keep it speed density
new lifters
new valve springs
Comp Cam roller race timing set
JBA Shortie headers - CA approved

Maybe a new disty gear.

Am I missing something? Can anyone guess what HP/Torque will this setup yield?

You need pedestal mount rockers not rail mount.

What is the reasoning for a 5.8L PCM for use on a 5.0L engine build? Did I miss something?

I would guess because the 5.0L HO has the same firing order as the 5.8L?

1994 and later trucks use the black Computer Controlled Dwell (CCD) style ignition modules.

That's a good question. 89F2urd thinks the 5.8 PCM (SD) will accommodate the increased airflow into this build better than the stock PCM of the 5.0L. In theory, it makes sense since the 5.8 requires greater air flow than the 5.0. I don't think the firing order makes any difference.

The 351 eec is just for a little compensation for added airflow, and as easy as it is to swap them, a misewell. It's not earth shattering, but it's a poor man's way of gaining a little tuning.

Ok - so the question is how does one take out the PCM or ECU ? Where is it located and what tools are needed? I found a few 91 F150 5.8L at pick and pull junkyards and I'm likely be able to find one in one of them.
