So they stuck them in the new GT and Raptor
I guess ford is really playing the EcoBoost card.
The new 2017 F-150 raptor and the new 2017 GT both have the 3.5 engine. The one for the GT making over 600hp. Raptor spec is said to be "more powerful than previous 6.2 truck" which means it has over 411hp.
What do you guys think?
I say it's pretty cool in both applications, although I think the new 5.2 flat-plane v8 might have worked better for the GT.

It may work in the new GT IF Ford races it's!!!
If they don't race it - it's just nice eye candy. I agree that V8's would have been better choices in BOTH platforms, but Ford is so blinded pushing the EcoBoost they aren't making smart decisions IMO. Remember when Chrysler had turbo 4-bangers in everything? Seemed like a good idea at the time didn't it?! Now where are they...?
Ford is putting all their eggs in the EcoBasket and that's not smart IMO! They NEED to keep the V8's around!!!

It's not just a Ford thing. VAG, BMW and MB are also heavily invested in small turbos and they are putting them in everything they build.
I agree Ford should keep the V8 and they probably will in some fashion for the near future. But comparing the EcoBoost to the 2.2L turbo Chrysler engine is like comparing running shoes to slippers.

A lot of people are crying about the GT having a V6. The only thing I believe is that ford wouldn't have done it if it didn't outperform the previous model by 20-30%, which means it's should just flat out scoot!
As far as the raptor goes, people are saying the same thing, "should've put a V8 in it!" I think these people are only seeing "V6" and don't have any idea what the EcoBoost really is. I say the EcoBoost was a good choice, make that a great choice, for the truck considering its wide spread success in the regular f-150s. And this one is said to be even more powerful. But I think they would sell even more trucks if there was a optional V8.

After owning an ecoboost, I wouldn't buy a naturally aspirated V8 in any future truck if I had a choice.
I know there are a lot of vocal naysayers on this site, but I think take rate of the EcoBoost is proving to be pretty high, and that's the data ford is using. They aren't acting "blindly" at all.

The Raptor is a specialty truck and while it appeals to all enthusiasts, there's a limited number of people that will actually buy one. It makes perfect sense. The 3.5L won't get any worse MPG's than the 6.2L that it replaces and it's producing more power than ever.
The only downside here is the lack of that beautiful beastly V-8 noise. Quite frankly, I love the smooth quiet power that mine makes.

From what I've read the reason for the EcoBoost going into the GT is they changed regulations in the European racing circuits think mostly at the famous Circuit de la Sarthe in Le Mans, France. No engine larger than 5.5L for naturally aspirated. No engine larger than 4.0L for forced induction.
I'm not sure about the EcoBoost in the GT but according to the regulations it cannot have Variable Valve Timing.

Sounds of the new GT beast! This is what the Ford GT will sound like at Le Mans
If that does not scream EcoBeast then I have no idea what does!

That's another thing...
WHY THE HELL DOES IT HAVE 10 GEARS?!?!?!? 6 wasn't enough?
It better have a WIDE range and the ability to skip gears. I'm talking like a 5:1 first gear and a 0.50:1 overdrive. If it doesn't then it's just a waste to have it shifting every two seconds.

The ones who'll really benefit from a very low granny are those who off road and the ones who tow a lot.

I had that discussion with someone else in the 2015+ F150 section. I too would like a 5:1 or lower first with a double OD. He was saying that they won;t go that low and would probably be around a 4.71:1 with a triple OD but nothing higher than a 0.61:1. I think they could spread them from a 5:1 to a 0.55:1 without a compromise. Since this new 10 speed is going to be used in what seems like all the trucks (including the Chevy Twins) then its going to make sense to have a low gear.

Gearing will settle around 3:55 ratio
First will be around 4: 90 with the final overdrive being close to 0.50
The 10 speed is like having a 4:10 geared truck and a 3:23 geared truck at the same time. One ring gear option makes building the trucks easier.
Yes it will have the ability to skip gears, the 6 speed will do that now if you put it to the floor at 40MPH. It'll shift straight from 4th gear to 2nd.
I'm also betting that the 10 speed will have a torque converter with a low stall and extremely fast lockup. It's probably run closer like a manual with the torque converter there to allow slippage. Gives you higher efficiency, but you need more gears to make it work that way. All the new mazda's with skyactive powertrains already work this way. Helped Mazda give their cars another 1-2 MPG.
