79 F250 Cummins - Build Thread

Well the tear down has officially begun...on its path to restoration and upgrading. I give myself a time frame of 2-3 years. I just finished up my 76 Bronco this fall so this is the next project. I will get a subscription and post pictures of progress as it goes.

Since I have had the truck I have had a Ford IDI diesel in it, an automatic transmission, a manual transmission and finally the Cummins for the last 3 years. It use to be a play truck but I don't have the heart to let it fall into disrepair so a proper frame off restoration is in progress.

As it currently sits:

- Cummins and NV4500/NP241 drive train with the following mods:
- #10 Fuel plate
- Max Spool 2 cam (or 2.5..can't remember what the owner of the original truck told me...I think he mentioned it is as big a cam as you can put in without fly cutting the pistons)
- 60HP injectors
- 3k governor spring
- 191 delivery valves
- Fire ringed head and studs
- stock turbo
- 24v flywheel with 13" clutch
- Dana 60s front and rear

Future upgrades/changes:
- 60lb valve springs and 4k governor springs
- Mac rack plug
- He351VGT turbo from an 08 Cummins (some guy makes stand alone controllers for the VGT) After talking with a guy who lives and breathes 12V Cummins I am shifting gears to a twin turbo setup he has made and installed on over 20 12V trucks.
- Factory disc 14 bolt rear end
- Rebuild transmission and transfer case. Transmission will get an upgraded input shaft.
- Dual disc clutch
- Add more suspension lift and reduce amount of body lift. I will also need to lower the engine down further
- All new bed pan and patch other panel as needed
- maybe go to an earlier style grill and headlights
- brand new after market wire harness
- full 4" exhaust
- Dyno and tuning by the 12V expert that is suggesting the twin setup.

Initial focus is to work around in the engine bay and front end to get things in position so the engine, turbo, radiator, intercooler, and all piping works together. Next will be to take the body off the truck, clean up and paint the frame. Then strip all body parts down to bare metal, prime, fill, block sand, etc. Then put it all back together.

I look forward to chatting with fellow Cummins swappers and all that are interested. I want to make this a clean, professional restoration.

Sounds more like a 79 Cummins truck RE-build

X3 for pictures, you don't need a subscription if you link to a Photobucket or similar.

May want to reconsider the 4k gsk. It makes your throttle way touchy. I would stick with the 3k if you drive her a bunch. The 3k is still touchy but no where near so. Also if you have a manual 215hp p7100 DO NOT RUN THE MACK RACK PLUG! Upon full throttle the rack will stick.

FordGuy62 it is 4WD.

C0425,
I have heard the 4k governor spring kit making the throttle touchy but I am going for it anyway. I have read many forums where it took a little to get use to the new throttle response and the people who put the 4k kit in are just stoked. I have no issues with touchy throttle with my 3k kit.

What is different with a 215hp injection pump that the throttle will stick with a Mac Rack plug? I would think the only things different in that pump vs others is a different fuel plate and stock 181 delivery valves? What is different that would make the throttle stick? I am using a 95 Cummins motor but I do not think it is the original factory pump that was on the engine.

I opened up a photo bucket page for now and loaded some old pictures of the truck. Hopefully this link works and then I can add more.

The 215 pumps already have more rack travel then the 180 pumps. If you change the plugs the rack overtravels and the rack bushing guide falls out jamming the pump at wide opn throttle.

The touchy throttle is easy to deal with. Since ever swap I've seen people have made their own gas pedal so just make one with a shorter ratio.

I matched the stock ratio for a dodge and mine is still a little touchy. I may re engineer it later on to fix that issue.

Thanks co425. I will have to investigate the injection pump more. I know it is not an all original pump. It has at least been rebuilt, but who knows what is in it.

I have been spending some time off and on tearing the front end off the truck and taking parts off the engine. There is going to be a lot of time cleaning, degreasing, removing old paint and grime in an attempt to clean everything up that bolts on to the engine and hopefully get some paint to stick.

I got into contact with an old friend of a friend who is what I consider a 12V Cummins expert. He owns his own diesel shop. He has convinced me to steer away from the HE351VGT and make his own proven twin turbo setup that he has built on over 20 trucks.

I had forgot to mention originally that the head is fire ringed and has studs. He will also dyno run and tune the truck for me once it is all back together. He feels 500HP is a reasonable expectation. I am going to be upgrading the input shaft on the truck and getting a twin disc clutch.

How's the Dana 60 rear holding up in yours? My older brother has a '79 F250 with a P-pumped 12V, and he's blown out two D60 rears, and a driveline...

The D60 rear did OK but I was afraid to romp on it even with the Cummins the way it is. I am swapping it out and putting a factory disc 14 bolt in the rear. That should hold up just fine.

Ok. Finally got around to subscribing. Time for pictures.

Back a few years ago when I had the 6.9L IDI and 38.5 Super Swampers. I really hated those tires. Constant flat spots.

Getting ready to pull the IDI and put in the Cummins.

Cummins sitting in the 95 RAM 3500 truck. Paid $4350 for the entire truck and this included the several thousand dollars worth of upgrades to the engine and drive train. NV4500/NP241.

Getting the Cummins in. It was nice to use a relatives garage with high ceilings and a chain hoist.

On 37" military tires as it currently sits. Hauling a heavy load of wood for my dad.

So long D60. Making room for the 14 bolt.

Stripping everything off the engine to clean and paint all components separately. I also will be removing the entire drivetrain to drop it down about 2"

If you wonder what is covered in the back ground it is the 76 Bronco I just finished a frame off restoration on. It was my first restore build. I learned a lot from it. I have to fix some minor issues with it but overall it turned out as good as I could have hoped for doing everything myself, most of it for the first time.

408W and 4spd top loader. Deep Impact blue.
