I had my local speed shop build me a 4R70W transmission to go with my Coyote crate motor. I am putting this all in a 1951 Mercury M1 Resto-mod.


I ordered a block plate from Performance Automatic, it fits the engine perfectly, but putting it up against the transmission I see some major issues...the location of the starter and the lower two holes are way off? There's no way this will work...

I thought this should be simple, but unfortunately is not.
Looks to me like they need to find the right trans case. Argh...


Curious what engine this transmission fits and what trans case I need that does fit?

 

Did some research and am answering my own question...lol
4R70W comes in two versions small block and modular. This trans case has to be for a small block. Back it goes...

 

I'm very interested in how this swap goes for you. How are you going to run the transmission? a stand alone computer? Have you started a build thread?

 

Why Ford didn't integrate the ability to run an auto trans into their Coyote wiring harness is a mystery to me, so yes no choice but to run a stand alone trans controller. I have the compu-shift II. Not cheap, but are supposedly one of the better controllers out there.

I haven't made one yet, but have planned and promised to. It is definitely on the to do list. I am finally at a point where I could start using some input from the FTE group. Hopefully will have it in the 1948 - 1956 F1, F100 & Larger F-Series Trucks thread soon, so keep watching...

 

Yes I also wish the Ford Control Pack would support their automatic transmissions, but none of them do. With the way everything is integrated in these wiring harnesses it would be a PITA to diet down a harness, then you have to deal with the PATS and the fuel pump driver module. Please keep us posted on your progress.
