Did they ask when you were going to fix it so they could have it back?

I think when someone is given something without cost or other obligation being fulfilled beforehand its rarely appreciated. Without having to work for something it becomes "worthless" in the sense no hard work was put into obtaining it so no big loss if it disappears or stops working.
There are those people who just don't appreciate anything that's done for them whether they've asked for it or it was just passed on to them.
Perhaps the only good way to teach others is the "tough love" route? Then again I'm a COD kinda guy so if someone wants something from me they'll pay for it up front in one form or another.
The upside to that is I'm all done with it for the moment, it's all on them for the duration.
Suggestion for you, tell the idiot that it's a cheap easy fix you just don't have the time to deal with it. But what you will do is sell him the car and let him make payments so he can get it fixed. This will get him to put in writing what he owes you. Now you have an iron clad case for small claims court to get a judgment against him for the value of the car.
