How to fix tire rubbing the leafs on 99-04 models for $8

Tires rubbing on the leafs at full lock has been driving me effin' nuts since I installed the 35's. Inspiration hit me last night though...and it works! Only cost me $8. Would've been $2, but I lost my tap.

What you'll need
3/8-16 Tap
5/16" drill bit
3/8-16 bolts (x2, 1" long)

I bought this from Lowes/Home Depot. Be careful using anything smaller, they snap easily and are a major PITA to remove...don't ask

In the picture below, you can see where the metal extension on the knuckle hits the axle. That is your turn limiter to prevent the tire from eating the leafs. The entire point of this "mod" is to extend it slightly. I highlighted the turn limiter in green.

So I drilled the metal extension 1.5", then tapped the threads out until it bottomed. Then simply run the bolt down flush.

Looks about like this

As far as loss of wheel travel, I lost about 1/8" of a turn...which is right about where the wheel always caught the leaf. So IMO I didn't actually lose any travel. Did a bunch of lock to lock test on flat streets and off-camber...and NO MORE RUBBING
Enjoy, and remember to be careful if you do all your own stunts like I do!

that's just concrete dust. I put the tire under the frame when I have it off for anything. Those are the drag marks from getting back out from underneath.

tires have <1,000 miles on them. thank god they're not damaged!

Good idea, both my 77 f150 and 79 bronco have the bolts from the factory for adjustment, wonder why Ford stopped doing that?

Yes indeed, great idea. Thanks!

So going the other way with this, if I wanted slightly more wheel turn, I could grind away the metal, yes? Of course, I'd want to check (and re-check) that my tires wouldn't catch anything, but it could be done?

Yep. Take a tiny bit off at a time to increase the wheel travel. Make sure to check off-camber as well as flat though. The wheel arc off-camber may hit where it wouldn't on flat ground

Before it was a stub of metal

After that same stub now has a bolt threaded into it. Shiny part is what changed

I said that because FORD used to install a 1/2 bolt in the knuckle to adjust for wheel lock to wheel lock.
