I may well resort to making up my own line from coiled stock of 3/16" line and the "A1L-3" fittings as Dave suggests. I can certainly buy the materials at less expense since I work for a parts distributor. My talent (or serious lack thereof) in cutting, bending and flaring tubing is the major obstacle. Hey, the idea of taking on a wasted truck project was supposed to be a learning experience. So I had better get on with it. Right now, I feel like what I have learned from the project is that I shouldn't mess around with a wasted old truck and maybe I should have bought one in better shape. - But where is the 'spirit' in doing that?? (After I sell or give this one away later this year and make to move to Washington State, I will probably be "on the hunt" for better toys.

One thing that comes to mind with your loose fit is that it is imperative that the threads are not cross-threaded. Cross-threading is really easy to do with these connections. I have had to take mannnnny breaks just trying to get one to align right. good luck and I hope this helps.

This one will work fine with a couple quick fixes. After you place the line in the bar and tighten the nuts -which will break the pins after a while and will never hold good enough - mark the backside of the line then tighten the bar into a vice good and tight and flare as usual. You can check the mark as you progress to see if its pushing the line out. The pre made lines that Ax measures are a good alternative but can get pricey (I'm cheap)

NAPA has 3/16" pre-flared lines in 20" and 40", which I'd guess would work if you fudge the bends around the springs a little. Interestingly, their pictures show one short nut and one long nut on each piece...
