I've got a 1987 F250 351W 4BBL auto. I just finished having the heads totally rebuilt and put it all back together. The engine fired right up and runs great when cold. As soon as the engine reaches operating temperature and the throttle is steady at a cruise setting the engine surges. It runs strong and then dies as if you lifted off the pedal. If you leave your foot where it is it then picks back up and then surges again and on it goes. As soon as you change the throttle setting is picks up and goes like a bat out of hell.
There is a lot of pollution control on this engine. I have checked and rechecked the vacuum lines and cannot find anything amiss. Could a vacuum leak cause this? I know the temperature controls the Vacuum Control Valves and so if when hot one opens and it is now a vacuum leak is this my problem?
I have set the floats on the carbs but no change. It seems to be a fuel problem so i am thinking of rebuilding the carb but would be pretty disappointed if the problem wasn't fixed.
Problem solved. I was in another post that had a link to the Chilton on line info. I found an EGR routing that was different than that in my Haynes manual. I rerouted the lines and seem to have it licked.
