'99 5.4 Expedition - Timing Noise

Hey Gang,

Have '99 Expy 5.4 with a rebuild at 130k, current 203k difference was some hard towing miles back and forth across the country...

Developed a serious chain rattle noise, was a qt low and on a long oil change interval... Can't think it is anything other than an incredibly loose chain/failed tensioner/failed guide... But wanted an opinion on whether I should be thinking about more than just chains and tensioners... Like phasers etc...

World's shi**iest diagnosis video link here for the sound under the hood

Thanks for taking a peak!

I would take the serp belt off and start it for a minute, to see if the noise is still there with all the pullys out of the picture, if you can hear it at idle. The 99 5.4 does not have cam phasers.

kb... YOU da man!

I was going to pull the driver valve cover first, ignoring the obvious and over-focused... This is obviously the infinitely easier and better progression to start...

The no cam phaser thing is EXACTLY why forums rock... Will investigate and report back...

Thanks a TON!

AutoZone timing chain kit OK???

DEFINITELY the starboard (drivers) chain for sure... Pulled the valve cover, and the chain is loose as all get out on the right side of the cam gear down to the crank... Can't tell, cause it got dark, but I think it's actually resting on, (and therefore slapping) the timing chain cover...

Question of the day... Autozone has the complete timing kit for $209... Has anybody used this before??? Junk??? Or OK???

Timing Kit/Timing Set 76078 at AutoZone.com

Will post a short video of the chain ...

Thanks for your help!!!

I dont buy anything from autozone, I would just make sure it has the colored timing links.
Dont forget the (optional) timing cover gasket, shaft seal, and gasket rtv for keyway and head to block joints.
Do yourself a favor and time the engine before you remove the chains, lock passenger cam as this one is under strain in timed setting, i use visegrips, but thats me. good luck

Well...

Mystery solved... As if there really was a mystery... This couldn't have been anything other than chain slap/rubbing judging from the noise... AND DANG!!! Are these engines loud or what??? If this was happening in the Jag or something else, You'd have heard it from 5 miles away...

LH (drivers) chain loose enough to slip a few fingers between the chain and lower guide, tensioner stuck compressed... RH (passenger) upper guide broken pressing chain into the cover...

Quite a bit of grinding the crank trigger too...

OH!!!
This thing seems to have jumped time pretty badly...
