What gear ratio's were available 1989 F150
I'm working on swapping a 5spd into where my AOD is presently. My truck has 3.55's. What else was available and were they different between auto and stick?
I picked up a transmission this past weekend, but it is a 92 model with no speedo. I can machine the case(and shaft) to accept the speedo but have no idea what tooth count would be needed for the transmission(I found out there was 2 different gears, 7 and 9?). The AOD gear is machine on the output shaft and might be kinda hard to count? Be easier if it was just a certain color like any other speedo gear.
Just a stumbling block, but need to know what is what back then as I want everything to work like it is suppose to.
Check with friend who has transmission shop, but his books are thin on information for these older transmissions. You can still get some parts, but the little stuff is NLA. He had an output shaft, but it was from a 4x4 and they are shorter and the speedo is on the transfer case side.

The most common gear ratios found in this era truck are 2.73, 3.08, 3.55 and 4.10. It made no difference whether it came with a standard or automatic transmission.
IIRC Ford typically used a 7 or a 9 tooth speedometer drive gear. The driven gears came in 16 to 23 tooth counts.
