99 Ranger 4x2, No Start

Recently shelled the transmission (auto) on my 99 Ranger with something over 250k miles on it (odometer quit 3 years ago). Truck started no problem after the trans failure. Fast forward 2 months.......Got a rebuild trans, installed, charged battery........truck will not start.
Compression test shows all cylinders within 5psi of 157, the lowest being 152.
Fuel pressure at 51psi (obviously not running).
Have good spark, although the plugs were fouled after the initial start attempt after trans replace.
Checked intake and found a mouse had made a home under the air filter in the box. Cleared everything out, restart attempt failed.
Any ideas, suggestions (aside from getting a new vehicle)?

Welcome to FTE.

Takes air, fuel, spark & compression to make em run.

Seeing as how you've done some good trouble shooting & measured compression & cleaned out the air box & checked fuel pressure, which measures low at 51 psi, I'd investigate that further, we are to have 64 +/- 8 psi.

If the fuel filter is due, or hasn't been replaced lately, I'd consider replacing it & recheck fuel pressure & if low, check under load battery voltage to the fuel pump when its running at KOEO.

If you have a good hot spark, try a whiff of starting fluid in the intake to see if it'll try to start & run.

You said you had to recharge the battery, so check its under load voltage, as it needs to be able to run the fuel pump & coil packs while cranking the engine up to speed, so it'll need a min under load output of about 9.5-10.5 volts to get er going

By then you should have an idea if its no start fit is spark, or fuel based. Let us know what you find.

Update..........The truck turns over smooth.

OK, if the battery & starter are spinning the engine up to speed on a cold start without lugging, it sounds like the battery, cables, their connections & the starter motor are doing their thing, so look to why the fuel pressure is low.

Check the fuel pump for under load voltage drop at the output/fuel pump side of the in cabin inertia switch, when you go to KOEO & the pump runs for a couple of seconds to prime the fuel system for a start. This will test most of the fuel pump wiring run & is easy to get at.

If the voltage is low, try thumping the inertia switch to trip it, then push down on the tab atop the inertia switch that pops up when its tripped, so it'll make a new contact position, then check under for load voltage drop again. If its better, replace the inertia switch. If no joy, wiggle or inspect the inertia switch electrical connector, to make sure its plugged in & locked in place & its pins & sockets are undamaged & without corrosion.

If all that checks out, back up to the under hood power distribution box & inspect the fuel pump power relay socket contacts. They should be snug, clean, without corrosion. Maybe give it a wiggle, or thump test to see if proper voltage returns at KOEO. If it does, try swapping the fuel pump power relay with a like one not needed to run the engine, like the A/C power relay & see how it goes. If all that checks out ok & fuel pressure is still low, try replacing the fuel filter & recheck fuel pressure at the under hood fuel rail schrader valve test port with a good quality pressure gauge & let us know how it goes.
