2001 Excursion/280k miles - Very Bad Oil Leak
Just signed on the forum so hopefully someone can help. I get 300 miles/gallon; of oil that is. Took to local mechanic and thought he had it fixed. still leaks. Is there a check list or something I can go through to do this repair my self rather than having someone else do it? I looked all over the web but can not find anything specific on 'how to'. Not sure where to start or even how to start, but would like to learn how to fix it my self. Any ideas or help would be appreciated.

Bill,
You will find the help you are looking for on this forum. Lots of great folks with increadible knowledge.
I would start by checking the engine valley for leaks. The area on top of the engine just under the big fuel filter housing. Most suggest spraying the valley are down with some simple green on a cold engine then lightly sparying it off with water. Cover the air filter & alternator with a walmart plastic sac.
Common leaks are from the turbo O-rings, the HPOP non-serviceable plug & HPOP lines. all of these can be done by you with some help from the forum. Once you get 20 posts you will be able to posat up some pics and fill in your signature block.

WOW!!!!
Thanks so much for all the links, pics, and advise. I will keep everybody posted on how its coming. I have not worked on vehicles much since I had a '67 ford Bronco back in college (graduated in '79). I have not liked working on cars, but with this info and your help, I think that it may go OK.
What special tools should I be looking at getting for any of this work. I have the typical socket sets, air drivers, etc., but some jobs need some special tools to make it more efficient.

Here's a picture without all the "stuff" in the valley:
Specialty tools are generally a case-by-case deal. One tool that has proved useful around the truck for countless jobs is a Mity Vac test and bleed kit. I suspect you will be needing a HPOP hose removal tool and a reference to the guru of yellow tape - riffraffdiesel.com
