Exclamation 1984 F150 Killing ME!!!!

Ok, so.

Bought this truck about 3 months ago... it spent its entire life as a dd in alaska and nevada (owner worked oil, drove from ELKO NV to alaska) every year for 6 months and it was his daily driver there...

well i bought it for 1400 with 112,450 from a 55 year old man, his reasoning was the clutch was too hard.

Anyway, within a week of owning it, the muffler clogged... the cat clogged, and the accellerator pump diaphram started pissing fuel... replaced the diaphram and deleted the "clogged" pieces

3 months later... i have a misfire... hesitation... surging idle... long crank... no start with out foot stabbing throttle.....

^ mind you this all started entirely out of no where.... aside from the ****ty mileage and lack of 5 gear, ive been more than pleased with this old truck.

WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED, i havent the faintest where to start.

1984 f150
5.8 (Carbed)
SCSB
4x4
NP435 (four floor)
straight piped
choke disabled

I'd love to see a picture of your clogged muffler bearings.

It's cooler out now, huh?
Why don't you just fix the choke???

It would probably be fine then, unless the power valve is blown too.
A 6.5 valve is under $10 and usually a good starting point if you can't find the # on your old one.

Maybe you ought to just have a reputable shop rebuild your existing carburetor.
It will never want to start without a functioning choke.

My straight 6 is running with the choke wide open right now. Not a big deal. Just hit the pedal 3-4 times before you start, and then lightly touch the pedal to get the RPMS up. Mine gets up to 800-1000, I run it till it warms up, then it goes fine.

Check your spark plugs, too, it seems obvious, but they will tell you a lot based on color. Too much fuel, not enough, you can sometimes see it on the plugs.

By any chance, if you get by the pick your part place, and you find the choke linkages, could you see if they have another? I need the linkage from the throttle to the choke. It is all missing from mine. I can send you what money if you tell me how much it will be and I can afford it.

Do not believe the miles shown on the odometer, as it reads to 99999.9 then returns to ZERO!

When one considers that it's...at least...5,000 miles one way from Elko NV to the Prudhoe Bay AK oil fields and if the OP drove this route for 30 years, it probably has 312,450 miles.

Even if the OP drove to Bellingham WA then took the ferry to Seward AK, then drove the rest of the way to Prudhoe Bay, this would be at least 2,500 miles one way.
