I'm trying to hook up my trailer brake controller. but fuse number 6 keeps blowing. When I bought the truck the trailer brake controller wasn't working so I figured it might've just been unplugged but that's not the case.
For some reason the fuse number 6 keeps blowing and I can't figure out why it's a 20 amp fuse. So I'm not sure that there is a relay or something that it's connected to it that it's bad maybe. Idk. I'm stumped.
My truck has a DP tuner but I don't think that has anything to do with it
Yes I did use the factory connector for the break plug.
But it doesn't matter whether the brake controller is plugged in or not, The fuse blows. So I'm not sure if there is a bad relay that I don't know about or something
The system you're troubleshooting originates from the Trailer Relay under the hood in the area of the master cylinder (the one closest to the fire wall). It controls the Flasher Circuit for the Trailer.
Pin #30 is the electronic cluster feed. Light Blue w/ Pink Tracer
Pin #85 Voltage Supplied at all times Light Green w/ red Tracer
Pin #87A Voltage Supplied at all times White w/ Red Tracer
Pin#87 Turn Signal Flasher Switch Light Blue
Pin #86 is Ground
Try removing the relay and reinstalling the fuse. If it stays good, test Pin #30 for power and #36 for ground. - That will eliminate that circuit (Switching). If the fuse blows, you have found the circuit with trouble. It lies between the relay and the fuse block.
If it doesn't blow, the issue is between the relay base and the rear trailer plug OR the relay base and the turn signal plug.
Let us know what you find and we'll get you through troubleshooting the circuit with the issue.
So what I'm trying to accomplish also is hooking up my 7 way trailer plug in general. I'm having trouble identifying Which wires are which.
I took a test light and I found the left blinker/brake, right blinker/brake, running lights(tail lights), and I think 12v power. But I don't know what the other wires are for. I counted 8 wires total. Which to me is a little odd cause it's a "7 way".
This is all on the pickup truck too might I add. So If anyone has a color code key or something to help identify these wires that'd be awesome. 2002 f250 7.3 6 speed
I don't know if this helps but here is my 2 cents. My under the hood fuse kept blowing for my trailer brakes as well. I found the power cable running to the trailer brake controller was loose and grounding out. Once I put a new connector on it. No more problems.
