New 6.0 Owner, low boost

Hey 6.0 Guys,

Well I'm the new proud owner of a 2005 F250 crew cab 4wd 6.0. I sold my '00 7.3 PSD and was planning on buying an OBS 7.3 or IDI. I know, how did I end up with a 6.0 when I was thinking IDI and why would I want an IDI anyway?? LOL. I love old IDI's and have a '93 F250 single cab that will probably be with me to haul me to my grave! LOL. Well today I came across what I felt like was a good deal on the above 6.0. It is a one owner truck, ran the carfax, and checked with the dealer that had it. Local guy bought it new and has had it until he traded it in a few days ago. It has 201K miles on it, and it has had the EGR delete done. That's all I know so far that it's had done to it other than it does not have a tuner on it and still has the stock exhaust and air intake.

Here's where the low boost issue comes in. I got them down on price enough that I will still feel comfortable in what I have in the truck even if I have to put a new turbo on it. When driving the truck it is lacking in power and builds boost very slowly when going through first gear and into second gear. It's not until it shifts into third that I can actually hear and feel the turbo. The most boost that I've got it to push on the in dash gauge is 20 PSI and that was getting on it hard. Now sometimes it will build almost no boost at all and feels like a slug driving it through out all the gears. Now from what I've read so far, I'm thinking possibly a boost leak in the CAC boots or maybe the plastic driver's side CAC tube or possibly the up pipes. I will check all those out. Or more likely the vanes in the turbo sticking. I'm also wondering if the module on the turbo may have issues since sometimes the turbo seems to be not working at all or just barely working. I apologize for my unfamiliarity with the turbo system on the 6.0, I got fairly versed on the 7.3 PSD turbo system as I rebuilt the turbo on my 7.3. Do you guys have any suggestions about my low/no boost issue or can point me to any more things to read?

One more issue, it's dripping fuel from the fuel bowl. I reckon it's still called a fuel bowl on a 6.0. I rebuilt the fuel bowl on my 7.3 so I figured I could do it on a 6.0 too. I looked on Riff Raff's site and didn't see a fuel bowl rebuild kit, I only saw a fuel pressure regulator kit. Is that probably where the leak is coming from?

One more question, I ran CAT ELC coolant in my 7.3 PSD. Is that acceptable for the 6.0? I read in the tech section that Ford Gold is the preferred coolant but I also read in another thread that some guys are running the red ELC coolant. I have no preference either way, I just want to run the best coolant for the 6.0.

Again guys, I apologize for my 6.0 ignorance. I hope to become as familiar and comfortable diagnosing and working on my 6.0 as I was with my 7.3 PSD and am with my IDI. I know that FTE is the place to be, it's always been my go to source so far!

Edit to ad: The truck starts fine warm or cold, idles fine no misses or shaking. Sounds fine to me, no strange noises or anything. No CEL on although I don't know if it has any stored codes. The old superchips tuner that I used to read codes on my 7.3 will apparently not read codes on the 6.0.

Welcome to the 6.0.
Most run ELC coolant, but done still run Ford gold. Don't mix the coolant types. Keep the coolant system clean. The oil cooler on the 6.0 is small and must be kept clean.

For the lack of boost, first clean the EBP, MAP, BARO and IAT2 sensors. Check to make sure the first three are the same at KOEO. Be sure to take notice of the units. One of them reads in inches of Hg.

You also can verify the turbo veins are working. There is a port you can visually observe to make sure the VGT is moving. The turbo veins like to stick on the 6.0, especially if they aren't driven hard. There is a turbo relearn procedure you can do also. It's all in the tech folder.

Next step is to remove and clean the turbo.

You'll need gauges. Scan Gauge ii or Torque Pro are the devices of choice. TP will cost you about $25. You'll find a writeup on TP in the tech folder as well.

Thanks, I'll check all that out. I had a SG II on my 7.3 psd, let it go with the truck. Stupid move on my part. I've run torque pro before so I'll probably go that route. What about analog gauges like autometer? Anybody run those on 6.0s?

I'm personally not familiar with Autometer and haven't seen anything posted about it on the forum.

Autometer is a brand. I'm talking about pillar gauges, boost, trans temp, exhaust temp, etc.

For low boost either the turbo vanes are stuck and need cleaning or an exhaust leak from either of the flex joints (most likely the un-braided flex considering the EGR delete) or one of the exhaust manifolds are leaking.

I would reckon 60% or more are using CAT EC-1 rated coolant around here, the rest stick with Ford Gold with consistent flushes.

That's old school, use digital gauges from DashBoss, Torque Pro, Scangauge, Edge CS etc.

Haha I do like old school stuff! What about the fuel leak guys? Is there a kit available to rebuild the fuel bowl like there is for the 7.3? All I've found so far is the FPR kit.
