cleaning cast aluminum
When I got my truck last November the transmission and transfer case housings were nice, shiny aluminum. After driving through one Minnesota winter, these aluminum parts have a white powdery coating. This does not want to just wash off.
Does anyone have any suggestions for cleaning and protecting these aluminum parts?

My Goodness,
I applaud your attention to detail. Cleaning the Tranny Housing.....
Well, I normally use a small steel brush,(and carb, brake or throttle body spray cleaner), that comes in those detailing brush kits. You know theres 3 brushes, about the size of tooth brushes, in the kit, (1 steel wire, 1 brass wire, and 1 nylon bristle).
But, I haven't ventured beyond the intake plenium, or engine compartment.
I'll hit the underside of mine, with a 3,000 psi pressure washer, with a "Robo Tip", from time to time. Then go back in after it dries, and do a good spray can undercoating job.
