73 F600 Rear Drum Question

Hi there everyone. This is my first post. I've been viewing the site for a few years on and off, looking for this or that answer, and now I've taken the plunge!

I'm Chris, and my project truck is a 73 f600. I picked it up for $500 dollars, had it towed home for another 550. I've rewired it from scratch. I had a stuck front drum. I had to replace all of it's guts. The master Cylinder, and now the rear brakes.

That's where I'm at. At first I couldn't get the lugs off. I tried pb blaster, oxy mapp heat, I broke 2 different 1/2 inch braker bars in the process. Finally I just took a grinder to the lugs. Now the wheels are off and all the replacement parts are on the way.. Now I'm wondering....

I have the 6 lug rims. My rear drums take 15x5 brakes shoes. The inside diameter is 15inches. Is there another brake drum that would fit that had 8 or 10 lugs?

I did some research, and it seems like the 94 f600 has 15x5 shoes and it looks like it might work.

And HI!

My 73 F600 brake drum with hub. 15x5 brakes.

A 94 F-600 brake Drum with 15x5 brakes.

As usual I'm really just trying to find an affordable path to getting new rims and tires.

Pretty sure you are looking at a different hub, as that's what the lugs were attached to.

1/2" tools are not strong enough for the torque required to properly reinstall your wheels.

3/4", preferrably 1" is what you need.

"Affordable" varies, but tires and wheels for these are not cheap.

Posts 8 and 11 here, $900 for 6 split ring with tube-type 900x20s. A good solution for that guy, ymmv.

You cut the lugs off.....how you gonna fix that?

Yea, I'd have to find a matching hub as well. That's where it breaks down. As for the lugs, I just bought new ones at NAPA. I've already upgraded to a 1 inch beaker, that was part of the learning process. I'm just spinning the numbers and trying to find a good solution for non split rims with decent availability.

I've already been quoted $235 each for the Accuride 28157 replacement. Which isn't the end of the world, at least I can get them. But If I'm going to spend that much, I'm just wondering if the same money could get me into a more modern rim.

19.5s with the 6 hole pattern are common. Tougher to find the 22.5s.

22.5s with 9R 22.5s seem to be a good size for these trucks.

19.5s are all too small in diameter, as they are usually 70 and 75 series tires.

So you didn't damage the studs, just the nuts?

I bought new stud's too. Not the ones in the hub, those are fine, but the intermediate ones got nicked up pretty good. It took a while to find the right part numbers. I've got the digital Ford Truck manual for 73 showing up in the mail this week to help with that. $22 at amazon.com

These are the parts I ended up ordering.

Lug Nuts

Right now I've got my sights on the 22.5's if I cant figure out anything else. I'll just do 2 tires at a time.

You found the right supplier for wheels... except the accurides are obsolete and have been replaced with European versions.... they don't always have them... see my post under wheels for our trucks. They weigh close to 100 pounds... and are from what I can tell are the only game in town for new 22.5 wheels... I bought seven but they are hard to get...the container of them was already presold
If you were close to me I have multiple sets of 20 inch tube type wheels....6 lugs are getting harder to find... military rock wheels work too...there are a bunch of those around in various configurations.
As others have said... 1 inch impact...right and left hand threads
Welcome to FTE...

Have you had the drum off that thing yet? If so, do you have pics of everything inside?

Yea, I finished that wheel. A Bit of a pain in the butt, but in the end after cutting off the lugs and then getting the intermediates off.. all I had to do was back off the brakes through the adjuster in the back.

I replaced everything and it ran fine for a bit. But ya know... Then the one on the other side blew. So I've got the parts to finish the last 2 wheels and I'll be done all the way around.

Though the other side the adjuster in the rear was locked up. so I couldn't get the drum off. I ended up pulling the HUB, taking a hammer and knocking the studs INSIDE the drum. That left me with the drum with a great big hole in the middle. So then I cut out the dust shield with a torch, took a hammer and screwdriver and beat the adjuster wheel until it started turning.

Vawala! The drum came off. I'm still waiting on the replacement studs from etrailer.com. Should be here this week. I'll post some pictures when I get home.

I just got most of the brakes back together on the right side. Lots of scrubbing and cleaning. This is a pic of what it looked like before i put the drum/hub back on.
I uploaded a bunch of pics to my profile. I was surprised to find out that the drum was a Dayton.

I'm looking for a fix for tires for my '69 F-600. it currently has 9.00x20s and I'm having a real problem finding 9.00r20s. I would really like to find 22.5 rims with the 6 lug pattern but I'm open to other ideas too. I've even thought of swapping the rear end and maybe the front spindles. Any thoughts?

Steve, I'm in the same boat. You've got to pay to play with these old boys. I've been diggin around junk yards and searching used parts sites on the net for them. I haven't been lucky yet.

I'm about ready to buy some 19.5's and call it a day. I've invested a lot into rebuilding all of my breaks. That's gona keep me holding on to my rear axel. If I were smart I'd go swap it out.

Thanks Chris, I'm thinking of doing the same. Have you found an outlet for 19.5 wheels with 6 lugs?
