Yes catch and sell as well as buy and sell, we do it all.
For the lower fastener on the stock headlights I just turned the adjuster all the way out. Once the headlight is then removed the adjuster is much easier to get to and the prongs can be then squeezed with pliers and pushed on with a screw driver to pop them out.
When I did the conversion in my X I left the headlights in the header panel and pulled the whole deal out as one unit. I installed an 05-07 header panel in my X.

Really worthwhile mod, and if you build it yourself, about $50 in parts.

Personally the only downfall I feel to having and leaving casting sand in a motor is the wear it puts on the impeller and the water pump housing itself. Beyond that if it was in there since new and hasn't caused a problem yet I don't feel it ever will.
It was mentioned that casting sand is in pretty much every 6.0 too, the one I rebuilt had no sign of sand anywhere. Even after turning the motor over many times on the engine stand and flushing out all the water ports I didn't see a single piece of sand anywhere.
Also there are something like over a million of these 7.3's running around most of which don't have coolant filters yet many go way over 500K miles without any "sand" troubles.
One reason I also like to avoid extra filters is more locations for possible leaks or failures. I like simple, simple works, simple doesn't break down.
I also feel that if there was any sand in the system there would be some in the bottom of the reservoir tank.
