Howdy,
"Turns over nicely" doesn't really say much. Any junk-yard engine will do that.
If you want to be able to run it with little or no problems, you'll want to do a compression check and pull the valve covers so you can look for evidence of oil on both left and right rockers.
I would pull the dist and turn the oil pump with a drill. Then I would slowly turn the crankshaft and look for oil pressure to the rocker shafts. (if it has a cross-drilled cam you have to turn the engine slowly to find the point at which the oil flows to the rockers shafts.)
For the compression check, you might also do a leak-down check so you can see if the valves or rings are leaking excessively.
You also might have a look at where the water pump will center on the radiator.
If you need to put a high mount pump and fan on it, you may have problems finding a suitable one if you don't already have one.
That 56 (if it was a V-8) likely came with a 272. The 292 will work fine.
Thanks guys I called him today to talk about it, turns out he builds old hot rods and is building 3 f100s,yada yada yada.he fired the motor up and it died, belives the distributer is bad. Thanks for the info guys
