P0172, P0300, P0303 codes.

Good evening folks. I'm normally in the 6.0L section.

My son just left. We scanned his truck and got these codes.

P0172 Bank 1 rich
P0300 random misfires
P0303 cylinder 3 misifres.

I used the Torque APP Pro to check these codes. I went to live readings in the Torque APP and saw some readings for Long term and Short term bank 1 Readings.

They are all "greek" to me, and I don't recall what they were, but could get those readings tomorrow.

When I have done searches combining these codes together, I see changing spark plugs. P0172 alone gets me a different train of thought. Mainly CAT issues.

Oh, also, his cranking to start is quite long. (A lot longer than my 6.0L would ever think of cranking) At least nearly 30 seconds of cranking.

Any thoughts?

We are leaning toward first just changing #3 plug.

A spark plug issue wouldn't make sense for a super-long crank. Telling us about the truck - year model and motor especially - would help.

Random misfires and long crank could almost be a camshaft position sensor.

Crap! I know better than that! (need to work fewer 16 hour days!)

I didn't say it was a 5.4l 3v motor. He bought it used. Hasn't gotten an Oasis report on it. So, not sure if anything of any sort has been done to it. He hasn't since he bought it 3 years ago.

110,000 miles on it. Gets only 12 MPG with mixed city/highway.

I have asked a couple times the model year. He says 09.

I saw your handle with this post and thought we had another 6.0L convert Sorry I can't offer any help with the codes. 12 mpg mixed seems low, I get 14+ with 35's

Thanks Tim. I have not converted yet. Don't plan on it for a few years. After retirement I might need to. The plans don't included a lot of miles of use on the 6.0L. Except camping trips in the summer. So, I might rethink things then.

The son has decided to change out that #3 plug. I suggested moving the coil over to another spot and seeing if the problem follows the coil.

12MPG seems a little low, although you said "son"... so perhaps he has a lead foot. My 09 SCrew 5.4 4x2 3.73LS runs around 13.5-14.5 depending on how kind I am to it - but it has 155K on the clock, aftermarket bumpers, a commercial topper, and about 1K lbs. of equipment on board. It's also used for emergency response, which isn't kind to fuel mileage.

Hopefully the plug resolves it, but that doesn't really explain the rich and random misfire codes. Let us know how it turns out.

Would it register "rich" due to lack of firing in #3? I don't know these motors worth squat.

As far as lead foot, he is a pretty mild driver.

He pulled the #3 plug. Put in a new one, but it still is misfiring. So, he might move the coil or just throw on another one. Hate seeing him throw parts. But, it seems to take sometime to throw a CEL with this misfire.

He drove 30 miles from my place to his without a CEL being set. Do these motors have "soft codes" like my 6.0L does?

Here is a pic of the removed plug.

Thanks.

Update

So, he decided to go ahead and replace all the plugs on bank 1.

Pulled #4, went well,
Pulled the #3 again just to see what it looked after driving some, plug was as black as the original #3.
Pulled #2, it looked better than the new #3.

Pulled #1. Well, that didn't go well. It broke. So, he will be getting the tool to remove the rest of the plug.

Has there been an issue where the last part of the plug falls into the cylinder?

Here is the picture of the plug.

We are leaning to an injector issue.

Well, he got the tool and got the plug end out. He has now gotten rid of the truck. He has changed employment in the past year and really no longer needed a truck.

So, if anyone needs a Lisle 65600 spark plug removal tool!
