Magic Air Heater and Duct Work

Having a little trouble deciding on this one. I've done a number of searches to try and find a solution be it seems to be evading me. I found a number of fantastic restorations done by firstrider but they don't quite match up to what is in my '56.

I have a Magic Air Heater unit that I believe came from the "shoebox" Fords. I removed it earlier this year when the heater core started leaking on the floor of the truck. I believe I can use a mid 90's F1/2/350 heater core and get close enough for a replacement. Existing heater core has a stamping HC-200 49 48J, I haven't found a corresponding part number in any web searches which leans me towards the F150 replacement.

What is truly baffling is the install of the blower unit done by a previous owner. The fan housing was hacked up as you can see and the blower was drawing air in from the engine compartment. My question is, where should I route the supply duct for the blower? I don't like the idea of continuing to use supply air from the engine compartment or cutting a 3" hole in an inner fender. Should I abandon this setup and search for something a little better fitting?

My ultimate goal is to simplify the engine bay, maintain the interior under dash space and get working defroster vents again. The cab can be easily heated with just the defroster vents and that duct work is already in place.

Engine bay with blower installed.

Other pictures for reference.

Cutoff part number ???-748

Why don't you go back stock? They come up on FleaBay fairly often because they are removed when converting to A/C.

Then, unless you get a fresh air unit (see below) you recirculate the air from inside of the cab.

OBTW You get rid of that honking big unit out of the engine compartment too!
