cab swap... 1973-1979 light duty supercab on a 73-79 f 600...Bill?

I would like to perform a supercab swap onto an f 600... same vintages

In looking at it I see the following
The cabs appear the same... the light duty has different mounts and obviously a rear cross member would need to be moved. I measured an f600 and a 79 f350 frame width and they were within a 1/2" difference of each other

The transmission hump may need to be cut out ...in an auto truck its just dimpled

The firewall appears the same
The swing pedals ..brake mc appear they...along with the steering column will bolt into a light duty cab with the appropriate floor plate

I believe the medium duty front clip will bolt up to the light duty cab bolt for bolt

So... the biggest issue I see is making cab mounts work

Anyone see any mystery issues I'm missing... obviously swapping wiring and dash pods etc.. that is move one to the other...

Bill... is my thinking sound?

Fender openings were a larger radius on the big trucks, so check that and see if you will have enough room.

My intent would be to use the medium duty whole front clip... fenders ...hood ...grill ...radiator support... just the cab portion of the super cab would be used
Thanks

Actually that is a beautiful example of a crew cab.... which was factory available.... I'm interested in a super cab conversion which wasn't available .......but if that was a light duty cab with a medium duty clip... then yes to that part....

sorry bout mixing the cab styles up. anyway , I used 1/2 ton doors and roof to repair a damaged f800. The only major difference I noticed was the floor/taller cab mounts.

Hi Anthony.. so are you saying that you built the truck in the picture.. or that you have done a similar conversion?

And when you say taller floor and cab mounts.. do you mean.. the medium duty had taller mounts.. or the light duty?.. an d I thought if necessary I would take the rear light duty frame crossmember so it has the correct cab mount configuation and use it on the hd frame

My idea was to use the light duty mounts ... and see how they adapted to the hd frame... if not then fab mounts

37 K Au money.. spendy.. but a nice example of unusual Americana firetruck history... clean job making a ranger bed fit,,, dont see those anywhere

mines prettier.. and four wheel drive.....

no on the crew cab. I bought a damaged f800 and used f100 parts to fix it. When looking a both trucks the larger ones had the taller cab mounts. The trans hump was taller as well. One option could be doing a cab clip. that's when you replace a roof and rear cab section at the windshield posts and thru the floor/rockers. Not very difficult to pull off

Only difference is the floor pan and firewall. Different mounting front and rear.

Just make new frame to body mounts and save a ton of floor pan changes. However; you will have to modify the inner fenderwells.

For the most factory look, you will have to swap all the floor sections. The rear supercab floor pan is totally different than a regular/crew cab. Forget all that. Maybe a combo is needed: rear cab to frame custom mount. Front body mount swap. The floor pan shape is nearly identical in the front so a swap could be done to retain the f600 body mounts in front and the inner fenderwell integrity.

Crew,, I knew you might pop up... so thanks

I had already planned on what you posted as my original route

Ok.. inner fenderwells.. what is different?.. I thought the front clips were interchangeable?

I agree.. too much work

Yes.. that is what I thought.. spacing as is appropriate and maintaining correct height

Front body mount swap. The floor pan shape is nearly identical in the front so a swap could be done to retain the f600 body mounts in front and the inner fenderwell integrity.
I had originally thought of building a custom mount.. in looking at the light duty on my 79 f 350 and comparing it to the f500/600s I have available it looked like they wouldnt work so I thought a custom mount to match the light duty was the best way to go... maintain the f500/f600 radiator support and put the energy into the f600 fender match up to the light duty body

What issues did you face in this regards?

Thank you

You will be using the f600 frame perches (doing no mods to the frame in front) for the front mounts along with the spot welded-on body mount that is spot welded to the f600 floor pan. Just drill out spot welds and swap the f600 body mount over to the supercab. Let me go check to see how they differ near the tunnel cover.

I recently used an f250 floor pan to repair my f600 one. Just not 100% sure how the f600 mounts terminate at the tunnel cover.

The f600 inner fenders tuck WAY under and contour to the f600 upper floor pan. The Light duty ones stop at the body mount.

I have aquired a donor for mockup...
I am thinking of perhaps going another direction... just doing a complete cab swap using all light duty stuff.. front clip etc... and then using bushwhackers on the front fender for the additional width and fenderwell opening

Are the cab mounts (front ones) in the same place fore aft.. or will I be moving them as well( if you know).. I then intend using the rear cab mount from the light duty and installing the entire crossmember into the f600 frame

As far as the tranny tunnel.. the donor has the high tunnel for an auto that I can cut out..if necessary I can make a tunnel alouth I dont think Ill have to... Im thinking everything else.. medium duty pedals etc can swap over.. one snafu to figure out will be the steering column which comes through the floor in an entirely different place

I appreciate any guidance

The original truck is a f600 300 six with a 2 speed.. it will be obiously frame off resto'd as soon as I finish project lil bit
