Pull the lockouts, "cog" ring and the back spring...essentially making it a two wheeler. Drive it and see if it replicates the symptom

Ok, thanks for all the help so far guys. I am going to go ahead and replace the u joints tomorrow since they are shot and see where that gets me. Reading around the net there are lots of different opinions on what causes steering to bind and have issues like mine. I have no doubt that the steering gear is in need of replacement but will have to wait on that as Rockauto will take a few days to get one to me, theirs is 60 bucks cheaper than local parts stores.

If you drive it with the hubs removed, make sure to tape plastic bags or create some other kind of barrier to keep dirt out of your bearings.

Got the axle out of the passenger side. The u joint is completely seized up on two sides, the other two are free. Hopefully I can get it out tomorrow, it's being quite stubborn.

Got the new u joint in the passenger side. Haven't really got a chance to test drive it yet short of moving it out of the garage. Hopefully I can test drive it next weekend when I get the other one done.
