Flagstaff, Pluto and Ford truck tires

Well I'm in Flagstaff for a conference. Tonight we went up to the Lowell Observatory for dinner and a presentation.
Well Lowell is where Pluto was discovered. The presentation was very interesting.
BUT, what do I take the most pictures of. You guessed it, a Ford truck tire.....

They had a used space shuttle tire and along side it a 1954 Ford truck tire for comparison. The space shuttle tire isn't super huge, but they air them up to 315 psi. The Ford truck tires are used to rotate the Clark Telescope dome and are still used today.

They are 6.00 16 6 ply tires.
The space shuttle has... well had... Michelin tires.

Man it's a sickness.

Tomorrow is a field trip to Sunset Crater volcano and Wupatki National Monument. Lots of presentations the last two days, I'm ready for a nice relaxing day.

Very interesting. More so is that they would use an off the shelf tire and relate to that truck application specifically. Sounds like you are having fun. Thanks.

Very cool! I have a dry-rotted version of that same exact tire in my barn. I can't imagine a tire with 315 psi!!!

I'll be sure to try that as soon as I get home. Where to you get an air compressor that has that much pressure?

That kind of pressure would make any wheel a widowmaker.

Cool display.

NASA has a couple. I don't think they use them any more.
