Hello fellow ford enthusiast. I'm having problems with my tranny or at least I think I am. My truck is a 79 ford f250 CC. With a c6 and 351M. I'm beginning to hear a noise right before it shifts into 1st gear. It's like a pretty loud ringing noise. But only when it's cold. And if I stomp the gas pretty good. If I take it easy it usually doesn't do it. I checked fluid levels... All good. Is my tranny fixing to give out? Or is it something simpler. If it is the worse. I am going to do a rebuild by me. Hopefully with y'all's help. I can avoid paying a nice 1,000$-1,200 rebuild bill. Thanks and anymore info let me know thanks...
Ohh it's a 4x4 now. I did the 2wd to 4wd conversion...
If I'm understanding you correctly you hear this noise when shifting from park and putting the trans in gear, if so it could be a bad torque converter or simply a bad bushing in the trans which would require a rebuild anyway. But hang in there the resident C-6 expert Mike will be along with better advice
Thanks for the reply oldmetal. I was begging to think I was annoying y'all experts. But yes that's what I was thinking also... I have a guy feeling it's the torque converter but I been wrong before.
Shifting into first gear, as in out of park? If it screeches that is normally indicative of excessive endplay. If it's run like this for too long it will usually scorch the thrust washers in my experience.

Actually I out it in drive and I speed up to next gear and that's when it's screeches. Sorry for the confusion

This one is really tough to diagnose by remote control but my first suspicion (guess, really) would be excess end play.
My question is are you sure it's coming from the tranny?
Yes that would be my guess. But now that you say it... Idk? Not 100% sure. What would a sound like that come from? I say tranny because it only happens when put in drive and right before the shift it does the screech or ringing noise. Thanks for the help mike. Also. When I did the 4wd conversion my 2wd tranny was only 1,000 -2,000 miles in from rebuild. Are the inside guts interchangeable? Could I use parts from the 2wd to the 4x4?
