New to me, 54 Year Survivor

Just wanted to introduce my self, and my new toy/ toy hauler... While on vacation in CA, my better half left me unsupervised with access to the internet. One craigslist ad and a few txt messages later. I parked this in her mothers driveway.

1960 F100, Custom Cab, 8ft bed style side. 292 Yblock with 4 on the floor. She looks great at 10 feet, when you get closer though, her age shows. Shes got new tires and brakes (drum sadly). An dual electric fan setup that came out of some pick and pull yard. The Y block is the wrong color, i was told it was rebuilt at some point... its blue. She runs and drives, though 1st and 2nd whine like you are beating her. Only 2 gauges work. Amps, and oil. I suspect she was converted to an alternator at some point. Iv not had much time with her, only an hour or so. I now await the shipper to bring her home! shes 98% rust free. Only one bad spot (about 2in) under driver side near front of cab. Rest is VERY light surface spots. Steering is worse then a drunken monkey.

I plan to patch her up, and put her to work, Box store runs, and pulling around my mustang, or the lemons race cars.

Suggestions on build will be greatly appreciated.

1960 F100, Style Side 8ft bed. 292 Y Block, 4 on floor.

Welcome to the forum! Looks like a solid start and you will get plenty of help from everyone here. What part of CA was truck purchased and what part of country do you stay? As for build suggestions....I am a fan of keeping it stock as much as possible, are you going to keep it black?

I bought her for $3500 in Costa Mesa, shes headed to DC Area... I thought that was a pretty good deal for a rust free classic truck till i saw the one some one got on here for 500. Well done! As for color... not sure, its rattle can black, with some runs, and shes got some light dents, as well as a bad bondo repair near the gas filler neck, on the back of the cab. Was thinking a nice satin black? Iv got no problem putting some money into her, but I need it to be reliable and I expect her to do a bit of work. My plan is to do as minimal as mods as possible. Power steering, front disk brakes and most likely rebuild the trans. Not sure if i will keep the Hurst Shifter. Ill prob rewire her as well, her wiring was pretty rough. I just want to patch her up enough to last.

I've always thought it was real interesting that all these great old cars and trucks are available in southern California where my in-laws live. Now I can see that the problem was that I didn't have unsupervised access to the internet on past visits. I need to rectify that next time we're there!!!

Its an interesting truck for sure... it claims to be a custom cab, but the steering wheel is black, when it should be white. Its got the holes in the side of the bed for the style side chrome trim. but the holes are not in the cab for it. I don't think the mirrors are stock. Its got a hole in the hood where it had a hood ornament. Did the V8's get that? I though i read the I6's had one. I suspect the motor may not be original.

I cant answer all Q's, but the mirrors are not original-they are clip on peep style. If you wanna post vin we can decode it and have a starting point.

Here is the vin F10C0P17154. Any insight into the wiper delete (there are chrome caps, over where the arms connect) or the extra spot lights?

Gimme a few on VIN...

Looks like PO put the caps and spotlight on-as far as I know the spotlights were not offered OE. You can source new wipers through the normal suspects-eBay, Dennis Carpenter...Macs-another member may chime in and might have a set or can give you more insight than I. What are you thinking about doing with spotlights?

Cool, so its most likely original block. Well I guess that answers the question about a 460 swap (iv got one sitting around). Best to keep what ford gave her. I got extra head gaskets and valve cover gaskets from PO any ways. As for the spots, i kinda like them. It looks like a pretty professional install, though they don't work. I think the bulbs and wiring are pretty tired. I am going to fix them up and prob refurbish them. I race in 24 hour of lemons, and so having a spot light may come in handy for various late night work. We have had to do some crazy **** at the track in the dark. Speaking of wiring... much of mine looks to be pretty shot. Any kits people like? I don't mind a bit more for plug and play.

I had good luck with the EZWire kit. well marked, more circuits than you need, but that is easy to fit.

So truck was finally delivered and I started really going though her. Its been a few ups and downs but her is what i have found so far.

Here is the glove box plate if some one would be kind enough to decode it.

Glove box plate

I found the block Casting numbers. It looks like I have a 272 instead of a 292.

Lower casting numbers on passenger front side of block

Upper casting numbers on rear of block.

Looks to be a ECG 1957 block out of Dearborn, kinda sucks she doesn't have her original 292 motor.

Also looks like she overheated at one point and may have some head gasket issues.

Looks like coolant leaked out of head and down the block.

I checked the oil, and its clean, no evidence of coolant in there, so not sure how bad it is.

Its not all bad though... I found the casting numbers on the intake...

Intake Casting
Looks to read
ECZ-9425-B WOOT!

At least iv got the nice intake...

I have yet to find the head casting numbers. I suspect they may be under the valve covers. I can only find an 81, on the front passenger side of the head.

Given the fact it appears to be a 57 block, and intake... perhaps i have the desirable ECG Heads?

I also popped open the really cool lights on either side of the windshield.

Neat Lights

Sadly they are completely empty... no bulbs, no mounting at all for any bulbs, no holes for wires, its just empty... Any idea why, or what these are off of / for?

I also discovered i am missing the flywheel dust cover...

Hows the clutch look?

Looks like the starter has been eating the fly wheel...

Just a little worn...

Not a bad night... just interesting with a few ups and downs...

Here she is looking a bit sullen in my driveway
