Engine Upgrade Question
I am trying to find out what I can do to kick my little 190 in my ford econoline pickup truck, 1965. It's a straight 6 so I think a header is out of the question, but is there anyway to upgrade it with maybe a different intake manifold and carb on top?? Any ideas, has anyone done anything to this engine???
thanks

I assume you mean 170 engine? If so, the intake manifold is one with the head, so you can't replace it. I once put a Holley 2-barrel 5200 carb with adapter on one. It drove great and got great mileage. I have seen folks machine the intake to accept a 2-barrel carb, but that would be a lot of work.
I put Clifford headers on one and it greatly improved the bottom end torque. You need to modify the floor a little to fit the header. That was 30 years ago. I guess someone still makes a header for these engines.
The best thing you can do is swap the 170 for a newer 200 engine. It is an easy swap that will give you more power.

Also a 250 head can easily modded to it the 170, more torque, bigger valves better cooling. The better cooling saves on constantly replacing exh. manifolds. And still can be found fairly common in older type wrecking yards on granadas, fairmonts and the like.

The 250 head is also an integral intake type head but as i say you have to do a couple mods to fit it on. and the exh. manifold also has larger passages.
Been a really long while since i changed mine over, i remember i think i needed to use the 250 pushrods. also you also have to drill & tap the intake to fit the waterplate/carb assembly on it. you also have to use the 170 rocker assembly and adjust accordingly
