2008 F250 6.4 Diesel "REDUCED POWER"

Hi All-
New to the site and I'm sure this has been answered several times.

Yesterday I was test driving a 2008 F250 6.4 diesel from a dealership. During the test drive "REDUCED POWER" displayed and the truck lost power. The dealership worked on it all day and this evening they called me and stated they had to order parts. They stated they had to change the water separator. Does this sound correct? Every thing I have read, when the wrench is shown it normal means the DPF needs cleaning. Also I read there is a water separator light, I didn't see this.

The truck is in good shape, so I walk away from this deal?

Thanks
Brent

Moved to the 6.4 forum.

It could be that the sensor in the water separator is dirty and faulty.

I would be inspecting the fuel bowl and the fuel filters for evidence of water.

See if they will tell you what code they got.

It is absolutely not normal for a wrench to display. Reduced power can range from a bad sensor to a Bad fuel pump.

Whatever it is, there's not much chance that they'll "patch it up" in order for you to buy it and you'll have problems as soon as you drive off.

I call them back tomorrow when service reopens to get the code.

So you think I'm safe with moving forward since they have to fix it anyway? I told them that I want a long test drive once they think it's fixed.

Long test drive, run it hard. If you have a trailer, tow with it if you can.

Check it over really good.

Check all fluid levels when the motor is cold if you can.

Also ask for paperwork of the exact repair and parts used. Ford now offers 2 year unlimited miles on their repairs and parts.

Definitely run it hard and you'll be fine if nothing pops up immediately. I'd also ask them to run a diagnostic and print the screen showing now codes. Preferably after you test drive. 100+ miles would be ideal.
