64 Ranchero w/c4 tranny

what year 289/302 motors will fit into my 64 Ranchero w/c4 Trans? Hope someone can help me out so I don't purchase wrong year motor. Thanks John

5 bolt bell or 6? If it's a '64 trans, it's 5 bolt. 65 1/2 went to 6.

I'm new at this stuff. All I know is it has a C-4 Trans. I will crawl under it tomorrow to check. Thanks much. appreciate it. John

Check the pan pattern and other info. The C4 has a separate bell, so you could change that if need be.

All 260s are 5 bolt. 289s up til mid '65 are 5 bolt. All 302s are 6 bolt.

64 falcon/ranchero never came with the c4 trans.
64 falcon/ranchero V8 cars also only came with the 260 engine.
so if you have a 289 with a C4 in the car, it was swapped in by a previous owner, so you will have to figure out what year you have before you proceed with purchasing a replacement engine.

Hi! Tom,
I thought I mentioned it has a 302 in it with a C4. I'm just going to have to crawl under it to see how many bolts the C4 has in it. I am purchasing an extra engine and C4 tranny from a gentleman who pulled it to install a six in his. Its a 289 W/c4 tranny 1968 with 67,000 on it. I am excited because he gave me both for $600. THese used older engines 289 or 302 are very hard to find around here. I am in process of putting in new cam (street) and new lifters ,timing chain set, new rocker arms, new gaskets,( heads were done at machine shop) in the 302 that's in my 64. The gentleman at the machine shop ordered the cam and lifters so I am hoping its the right cam and lifters. So I am really doing a lot of video watching and reading my manual, for different steps to put it back together . Trying to do it right being a first timer. I did see a few videos of reinstalling the damper(balancer) and they used the crank bolt to pull on the Harmonic balancer. Some videos show using a tool to pull it on? Wondering if that's o.k. to do or are both ways O.K. Thanks John ( I did buy a new balancer.) P.S. I guess it doesn't matter now about the right motor beings I bought one with a C4 on it.

the 302 in the car and the 68 289 will both be 6 bolt bell housing pattern.

68 was the last year for the 289. i have seen a few 302's made out of 289 blocks, and a few 289's with 302 stampings on the block. so the 68 may be a 302 also.
the only difference between the 289 and 302 is the rotating assembly.

i am putting together a 89 5.0 HO for my 65 2DR HT.
i am using 73 small chamber heads with oversized valves, comp cam springs, screw in studs, and guide plates. these heads have the large spark plugs, so they look like stock heads.
i am also using a ford motorsports E-303B cam, FMS 1.7 roller rockers, edelbrock performer intake, and edelbrock 600 CFM carb..
this setup will give me 396HP at 5,000 rpm according to desktop dyno using the 351W van manifolds with stock 89 block and rotating asembly.
the van manifolds look and flow just like the 289 HP manifolds used on the falcons and mustangs.
when installed in the car, it will look just like a stock 289 hp engine


we build the identical engine 4 years ago and put it in a 36 ford pickup, it pulled 402 HP at 5,000 rpm on a dyno.
the only difference is the 36 has short tube headers.
