Hi guys, found an 56 F350 i would like to get for my project back home, but its in bits and has no title, in bits isn't an issue, as it will make life easier for packing in container with other vehicles, but the guy selling has dropped the bombshell now that it has no title, my american base and address is in ND, but if its easier i have addresses in TX, MN and IL i could use to get a title if some states are easier than others, the info i have is that all i need is vin details and the bill of sale, but would i have to use this in the state the vehicle is from, or am i ok getting a new title in any state.

I have no experience in any of the states you listed but can tell you my experience and maybe some info you can use.
I live in Kansas and always thought it was pretty easy getting a title having bought several vehicles without one.When I went to title my 56 F-350, I had a bad title (skip titled then PO did not re-title so basically I had a title assigned to the PO.) So I decided to title with a bill of sale which I also had and not mention the bad title. I had purchased the truck out of state so it had to be inspected (may apply in your situation). At the inspection they said the data plate had been tampered with because it had been screwed on, not riveted.The jury is still out but my research (including many contributors on this site) indicates they were that way from the factory (all I have seen used the exact same screws). In the state of Kansas, if they think the data plate has been removed and reattached (even with rivets) "it is considered tampered with and may as well not even be there" (the inspectors words exactly). Anyway at the time they could not find the VIN stamped on the frame so could not pass inspection. This was my fault, I should have found it before I took it in (so be prepared). I found it the same day, once I got home, under the passenger side foot well on top of the frame, if I'd done a little research here first I could have saved time, paint stripper and anxiety. Maybe because of the failed first inspection, my case got escalated and now they said, even with the found VIN stamped on the frame, I had to get a good title in the PO’s name to transfer into my name. The bad thing was it had been seven years since I bought the truck! Miraculously, the cell number I had for him was still good and I eventually ended up getting a good title (that is a whole 'nother story). If I had not been able to contact the PO I would have had to sue the state of Kansas for a quiet title. Not as bad as it sounds, something I could have done myself, but would have cost around $200 plus my trouble (going to court etc.).
Oh, and even though the original dataplate matched the VIN on the frame, I got a new plate with a new KS ID, which is nowhere on the frame, just my title.
If you can, apply for the title in the same state where you bought the truck;it helps if that state was the last one to issue a valid title, which you probably will not know.

 

Why cant the guy selling the truck come up with the title/ bill of sale? If he owned the truck all he has to do is go down to DMV and get a duplicate. then you have no problem, unless he got the truck without one, be carefull if it comes back stolen or salvaged, it's tough to clean that mess. You may never get a clean title for that truck!

as the truck is going over seas, any title will be good, don't think it will matter if its a salvage title as this won't show on the UK title

 

In Sweden any car with "unsure" history is more or less scrap no matter how good looking. You can barley sell it as parts.....

 

Not sure about other states, but Tennessee is pretty easy if you trust the history (ie - it's not stolen) and have a bill of sale. I've done it with a '65 ford truck and a '56. I had a few old registrations for the '65, but the '56 was just a bill of sale.

 

If the title is just lost, was originally titled in owner's name, there is a simple form (and small fee) for that. Should not be a problem.
If he never titled it in his name, it may be imposible for him to get a vaild KS title, he (or you) would have to go back to whoever he bought it from for them to get a good title. Kind of ironic, but it doesn't matter who it comes from, it may be easier for you to title in another state with just the bill of sale, depending on what you hear from the ND, TX, MN contributors.

Compared to the hoops you have to jump thorugh to import these vehicles this probably trivial stuff.

 

the paperwork for shipping is simple as i've done it a couple of times, but only simple if the vehicle has a title, if no title, it does get complicated
