01 f350 7.3L with 08 tailgate w/ camera
So i recently bought an 01 f350 with a 08 tailgate with a built in tailgate camera. I would like to use the built in camera on the tailgate and connect it up to a new head unit that is capable of displaying the feed. Is there a head unit that can do this, and second is there any tricks for running the wires to and from the head unit to the tailgate? I have read about shielding the wire, but how necessary is that really? I have installed a few head units before, but is it better just to take it to a professional? If this is impossible, how can i connect up an 08 mirror to use the camera?

While not a ford, I did a backup camera on my old 1500. Everything was pretty smooth, I did not use any aditional shielding for the single RCA other than using a sheilded cable. I don't know how you want to power it but if you want it on with the backup lights, you'll need to run the power off of the backup light signal/bulb power wire.

You need a "shielded coax" cable with RCA connectors for proper video. Otherwise who knows what interference you might get. While you can use a typical audio RCA cable and it probably would work, it is not the proper impedance or shielding for a composite video signal.
Bottom line, buy a true video cable (usually has yellow RCA connectors) for this purpose. It can even be a cheapy one from walmart, and you'll be fine.
If you are good with terminating coax cable, then you can also use RG-59U cable (cheap) with a copper center conductor and copper sheild. Terminate with typical F-connectors and you can buy female F to RCA male adapters at The Shack.
