sad day for my baby. tranny.....

Bought a new camper Saturday to take to tx for the job. My truck didn't like towing the load. The tranny temp was just a little over 200 going 55 on i10. The front seal started pouring fluid out and I was stuck in bumper to bumper traffic in on the bridge in Baton Rouge. I made it to the top after stopping about 10 times because of the traffic. I coasted down just to keep off the throttle and run the temp up more. I stopped at the first exit and dumped 3 quarts in. I drove again until I hit 220. Pulled off and waited. Cooled down and tried again. 3 stops to the next exit after sending my dad ahead to get 4 more quarts. Sitting here waiting on my cousin to come get the camper and hope I can limp the truck to my mom's until I can fix it.

Stock cooler and a big camper aren't good. In stop in go traffic the torq convertor doesn't lock up so that makes heat in the trans. I am taken it that your truck is stock, you don't list what you have.

Be proud that you had the sense to keep an eye on the trans temp, let it cool down, and add fluid. Now you can limp home for repairs instead of sitting on the side of the road with a pan full of metal and an expensive tow bill.

I did add a aftermarket tranny cooler Saturday. Between the south Louisiana heat and the camper that stop and go up the bridge in Baton Rouge it was just a bad combination. Made a phone call and my cousin came with a cc f350 dw 7.3 of course. He's towing the camper and I put more fluid in and I'm running 65 and the tranny temp is at 165 now. The truck has 286667 and counting. I don't know if the tranny is original or not. I've had her about 2.5 years.
She's cruising on. So we are headed to nederland now

I'm guessing more is going on. 200-220 isn't very much really. I saw 250 on my old one without issues, but wouldn't want to do that too long.
Check out some of the Texas folks, they are more than willing to help.

Do you have a real trans gauge? IIRC they puke fluid when hot, but 220 isn't hot. Keep it cool and that seal will stay sealed.

6.0 trans cooler is the answer here.

The stock temp gauge won't move until the trans gets to 230°F.

I have aftermarket gauges on the pillar.

After my cousin showed up with the drw and hooked to the camper. I added 3 more quarts of that cheap crap from the gas station and drove on to nederland tx with no problems. Tranny temp stayed at 165 and no more leak

OMG....Your post made me remember.....
Mine went out on me about 3yrs ago at 180K. And it went out in style....
One of the property security guards, (rent a cop. Likes to wear his badge on his belt and strut around), walked over to me when I was parking in the underground garage. He started telling me how people where whining cause of the diesel smell yadda yadda yadda.
I had just said my peace and he started in on how bad for the environment diesels are and the smoke and all...I asked what smoke....none seen...Then he started in on all the fluids they leak...I said What leak? Nothing there...
That afternoon when I left...the tranny gave out...She spewed tranny fluid all over the garage floor as I pulled away.... Got it just far enough from work so I could pull into a parking lot to have it towed to the tranny shop.
They sent out an email complaining about the fluid on the garage floor and the cost to clean it up...but they never knew it was me. I just drove my other vehicle and told em the wife was using the truck. Got it fixed and drove it again...No leak! Geeee wonder how that happened.

OK Sorry...Had to tell...

Several guys in Houston that probably won't mind offering up some help if it's needed. They did for me.

Thanks. I'm actually in the middle of changing the filter and fluid in the tranny now. Also flushing the cooler out. The fluid is burnt. I can't make up my mind if I want to use the factory cooler or use the aftermarket one.
