fixed my tailgate - it opens now!
My tailgate release was bent way out of shape. The handle by itself would no longer open the gate. I had the access panel removed so I could reach over and pull the rods together to open it.
So rather than remove it to try and straighten it, I drilled new holes for the whole handle mechanism about 20 degrees counter-clockwise of where it was before - this tightened everything up, and the handle works fine now.
And the window still works, in case anybody's wondering.
