1954 And 1955 239 Y Block Color

I have a 1954 F100 with a 1955 239 Y block. I would like to paint the motor the correct color for 1954. The motor was painted Ford blue, but I can see orange underneath. So I guess that the '55 motors were orange. But what color were they in 1954?

Hi NJ,

You'll get some debate on the original colors, and will probably have to put some hours in until YOU are convinced that you have the right ones, or something reasonably close. Here's a 1956 engine in the correct colors except for the exhaust. The exhaust was originally black but this owner used a ceramic-based coating that looks kind of like bare metal. I'm planning on using high-temp black.

The best matches I could find to these 1956 colors are:

Engine yellow: Krylon DE1642 Daytona Yellow, 500 F
Engine black: Krylon DH 1602 High Heat Black, 1200 F
Engine silver: Krylon RTA 9213 Aluminum Ė (valve covers only)
Inner fenders, radiator stuff: Krylon RTA 9203 Semi-Flat Black

I'm not too happy with the Aluminum color match, but I want a rust-stop formulation that will take some heat and solvents. Anyway, thatís what Iím going with unless I find some better information.

Here is an FTE thread (that references other threads) about engine colors for a few different engine years. It talks about where the information came from, how reliable it is, and how to get along with your wife when she is choosing colors for you.

Lnk

There should be a good hour or more of reading there. I'm pretty comfortable with the 1956 colors based on dealer brochures, other web site info, etc. You may want to do some more sleuthing on your own regarding other years. Make sure to let us know what you find!

1954 And 1955 239 Y Block Color

All '54 engines, 6 and 8 cyl, were red. '55 and '56 engines were yellow. To satisfy yourself buy a color sales brochure. You can find these on ebay. I have a '54 239 and have several color brochures. I recently bought a '55 brochure on ebay and it shows the 6 cyl and the smaller 8 cyl as yellow, however the 2 biggest engines for F-700's and up were red!
Scrape some of that blue paint off and look for the original color. I found red on the valley cover pan.
good luck, abe
PS: look at my gallery for a pic of my dirty engine with Ford blue and you'll see some red in various places.

Thanks Earl and Abe! I guess the engine that I bought is a 1954, because it is red (red/orange)under the blue paint.
