No 5th or reverse

What happened to my trans. On the way to work before i even got the the end of my rd i started shifting down from 5th and when i got going again i could not get it to go in 5th. So i drove all the way to work with no 5th and found out i also have no reverse. I can shift into reverse but when i let off the clutch it grinds and pops out. If i try to hold it in it will back up a little then really grinds and forces itself back out. What happened. 88 bronco btw

The M5OD-R2 is not known for endurance and has well documented issues with Fifth/Reverse. A physical inspection is necessary to ascertain whether its fork, slider, and/or syncho related.

Well so far what i dont was take off the floor plate and take the top cover off. Found my problem i believe. The 5th and reverse shift rail will only move about a 1/4 inch so something is stuck or bent. Gears all look good. But i have a 95 f150 5spd i took the top cover off that and it slides nicely so im gonna put that one on and hope that is my problem which i think it is. As soon as i get new rubber plugs and rubber gasket anyway. Fluid obviously still nice an bright red because its only got 75 miles but i wonder how much filings are on the drain plug magnet.

I changed the top cover and does the exact same thing. What else would cause this i dont see and worn parts in the transmission.

Check the arm that is mounted to the driver side inside of the transmission it might be binding or stuck. That arm is the arm the move the synco either into 5th or reverse. You have to have the top plate off of course to do this

fordka, During the physical inspection did you notice appreciable metal shavings/fines on the magnetic drain plug? You mentioned you "didn't see wear" but didn't comment on the drain plug condition.

Again, after ruling out linkage issues your next step is to evaluate wear on the Fifth/Reverse fork using a clearance measurement, Fifth/Reverse synchronizer hub wear, and the integrity of the Fifth/Reverse shift rail, individual synchronizer rings, and overall subassembly. These obviously require removal, disassembly, and detailed inspection.

Doesn't sound like the trans needs dropped sounds like minor shifter/shift fork issues.

Couple clear pictures of what you're seeing would probably help, pictures of the trans cover off, picture of the shift forks the rails and the shifter itself.

Did you try to select 5th and reverse with the cover off? Quick easy test, if will shift with the cover off slide fully into both gears that would quickly verify its not the trans that its a shifter issue and an "easy" fix.
