wanting to build a 350-400hp street truck
Like the title stats im looking a buying a truck and turning it into a lottle street truck. I posted in the 97 up F150 section and got nothing so im down jere where I know a 302 V8 can be built for power! Im a Ford guy and both my cousins are GM nuts, my one cousin has a 1979 GMC with a nice 383 motor that runs! My other cousin just finished his 2001 Chevy with 6.0 block corvette heads intake slight cam work blah blah anyways left the tuner monday with 390 something at the wheels. (Yes I seen the video of the dyno tuning) so I want a nice 2wd reg cab short bed 302 V8 or 351 of course so how jard would ot be for me to throw long tube headers custom exhaust a good vam some head tweaks different intake and a tune and hope for 350+ hp at the wheels?

I did this with a 95 maf 302 , about 260-270 at the rear wheels , stock bore 302 , it would run low 14s in the 1/4 mile , after adding nitrous it would run low 13s , if you can't find a maf 351 i would look at 94-95 maf 302 with a 4R70W , you could stroke it to a 347 , with some weight reduction you can get these little trucks close to the same weight as a fox body stang....

That's a little bit of a stretch in my mind. These trucks about about 1,000lbs heavier than a fox body unless you choose the lightest truck and the heaviest fox body, but I'd guess there's still 5-600lbs there.
You're definitely going to want mass air flow or MAF for sure. You can convert without too much trouble, so if it were me I'd be scowering the junk yards looking for MAF trucks to pull parts from.
I'd say go with a 351w and get a roller cam block. Roughly 94-97. You can build a 347 stroker, but you can also build a 408 stroker based off the 351w. 61 more cubic inches will do a lot.
I'd look at a set of 210-215cc aluminum heads, 190's will be restrictive. I'd also run a mustang intake as the truck intake in my mind will get restrictive. Plenty of parts to get to 350-400hp and these trucks are light by modern standards. My 86 F150 4x4 is around 4100-4200lbs where as my 04 Ram 1500 2wd is 5,000. Less weight is better. I'm betting a 2wd short bed will be the lightest.

I'd love to watch your build. I'm thinking about a similar plan, but I'm going to wait a bit in order to drop a modern crate engine in. Make sure the rest of your driveline can handle the extra power as well (suspension, brakes, axles, etc). Although beefing those up will cause weight to go up as well.

I agree with what others have stated. With upgrading your engine to get that kind of horsepower, comes upgrading other things to withstand that horsepower. It's very possible to get those kind of HP numbers, you just need to be aware of what else you'll need to upgrade. I too, would recommend a transmission and driveline upgrade if you're looking for 400 horse. Perhaps some suspension work and brake work as well.

how is a GM modern? its still basically a 350 small block with fuel injection just like a 302 or 351. The windsor just doesnt have COP... doing a small parts listing with the truck and then a stroker kit etc im already at like five grand before tires wheels and adding new brade pads rotors shocks etc! My cousin has under 6k in his entire build!

Not even close.. it's a fully modernized motor.. it doesn't share a single nut or bolt with the old '90's vintage SBC. If your friends were starting with that platform they would be doing even more work that you.. throwing away the whole works and starting with a crate motor because the engine that came in trucks from that period were paper thin recycled junk.
Does that include the purchase price of the truck?
