460 E4OD 2wd to 4wd tranny swap only

So, I've search the threads and googled 'til my head hurts.
My question is simple, yet hard to find an answer for.

I have a 95 F350 crew cab dually.
460 efi with e4od tranny. 2wd
138,000 miles. Rebuilt the engine 1000 miles ago (head gasket blew) and tranny is going out. 60 mph top speed-downshifts at slightest hill.
I have two options: Rebuild or replace.

I am toying with the idea of replacing the 2wd e4od with a 4wd e4od and transfer case. Just the tranny and transfer case. Only want to use 2w high and 4wd neutral.

Have a 42' diesel pusher RV and would like to tow the truck 4-down. Use the bed for my motorcycle, spare 100lb propane tanks and stuff. Then drive at destinations.

Will my original drive shaft fit, will it need to be modified, can I use the 4wd shaft or will I need to get a custom one made?

Anyone know the answer?

Thanks!

your driveshaft wouldn't work any more because you'd have a t-case taking up some of the length where your shaft used to be.so you'd have to have it shortened.

If you dont absolutely need the nuetral you could just swap your tail shaft housing on to the new trans then you don't need a new drive shaft

Or you could swap it until you find a shaft then you could put the tcase and ext. housing on later

As I said, want to tow 4-wheels down behind my Rv. Need 4-wheel neutral.

The tranny output shafts are different between 2wd and 4wd. Found that out already.

Trying to find dimensions. Measured mine. 27-1/2" long with 10-1/2" tail for 38".
Now I need measurements for a 4wd auto tranny and transfer case.

ah ok.right.for some reason i forgot the tail shaft would be there for the 2wd haha!
or,if you knew the length of the BW1356 t-case (id guess you'd be using this common t-case with it's slip yoke as that would have came in '95)

that doesn't come right up via quick google?
edit,no.im wrong yet again ain't i? there's the adapter in place of the tail and then the t-case.so pay me no mind.your right.you need the whole thing measured.don't let me screw ya up.
if i wasn't so beat,id run out and measure the E40D/1356 combo for ya but iv been climbing tree's (arborist) all day brother.if no one responds by tomorrow or this weekend i'll take the measurement for ya.

Okay, your talking to a shade tree mechanic. I can fix about anything. I can rebuild an engine or a complete vehicle, but I am a novice at swapping out pieces with different pieces. i.e. a tranny / transfer case.

I can get my hands on a manual-shift transfer case out of a 1990.
Also get a 460 4wd auto e4od out of a 1995.
$725 for both.
Part numbers unknown.

Only thing left would be a drive shaft to fit, or get mine reworked to fit.

There's another free option for flat towing. You have a full floating axle, this means by pulling the 8 bolts on each side you can pull the axle and completely disconnect the rear wheels from the rest of the drivetrain. If you don't flat tow often enough to make it too much hassle it's a free option with only minor hassle. Find a wrecking yard or something and pull any two 10.25 FF axles, cut the shaft off the flange to use the flange as a cover when the axles are out.

And your transmission issue may be an electronic controls issue, not the transmission itself.

I never knew the output shafts were different on 2 and 4 wheel drives. Pulling the axle shafts seems unnecessary, if something happens to your o- rings you might end up waiting for new ones to come in removing the drive shaft isn't all that difficult but for over $700 I would spend a little more and rebuild yours and maybe upgrade some week points

O-rings, just use silicone, no big deal.
