You had power steering fluid all over because Ford C2 pumps will puke all over if you turn the wheel without the pump turning.
This is normal.

As for your dead battery, I'm going to suggest failed alternator.
There is no way for the starter to kill your battery while driving or you are sitting in the bar.

Disconnect the alternator cable from the fender solenoid and fully charge the battery.
Reinstall the battery.
Is there a big spark while attaching the battery cables?

If no,
Put a meter or test light between the battery+ solenoid stud and the detached alternator cable.
Does it light up brightly or the meter show significant amperage?

If so, you have a failed rectifier or the dreaded 2G "fire plug" has shorted to the case.
