Cam Phasers, Timing Chain, Bad Fuel Economy ???????????
I am sorry for bringing this up about CAM PHASERS. About 2 years ago I purchased a 2007 Ford F150, 5.4 engine with 54000 miles on it. At 78000 mile it developed a noise what I thought was a exhaust leak so at a normal oil change at the dealer, they inspect the problem and determined that it was the cam phasers and if I can live with the noise, would be fine for a very long time. Since they change the oil every time, they said we would keep our eye on it and analyse as needed. After a couple of oil changes, it started to bug me and I asked for a estimate of the phasers to be changed and at the next oil change, they did a complete tuneup but, after inspecting the noise, they felt that it was a timing chain tensioner because the noise did not change with elevated rpms until 1800rpms and with the cost, was to pricing to work in at that time. At 97000 mile it went in for another oil change and inspection of the noise and they would say what it is. It is to hard to diagnosis until they had it apart. I just turned 100000 miles and inspected it myself. The passenger side noise seems to be by the cam gear in the front of the engine. The driver side noise seems to be above the 3 cylinder, I did usea scientific method, (stick to ear). This truck since I have owned it has not missed 1 time and only did the tune up because of the rumors on spark plugs of the 5.4. I travel all country miles and check mileage often. I just checked the last two times i filled up and am averaging 9.25 mpgs. I have always been 14 mpg. Just wondered any guidance in this situation. The dealer I have dealt with a very long time and has been excellent. I also love this truck and has been great. If you can offer any help at all, please let meknow. I read a lot of the post but seem a little different than my situation. Thanks
