monster torque 460?

how do you build a 460 to make horrindous amouts of torque way down low? i read some where someone had one tha made 550 ftlbs at like 3000ish rpms. it doesn't need to rev over 4000 or so. would like low comp, for cheap gas. what kind of combo would i need? thanks

429 or 460 short block. Factory passenger car conn rods..
C/R from 9.0 to 1 to 9.75 to 1
non ported D0VE-C iron heads
edelbrock performer intake with holley 750 vac secondary carb
Factory dura spark distributor 14 initial and 24 centrifugal for a total of 38 degrees timing.
Comp dual energy cam 206 / 218 @ .050" lift. .497" / .502" lift on a 112 LSA. You can substitute the XE256 H in the comps extreme energy line. Just be carefull of C/R
Factory exhaust manifolds with duals 2 1/4" and H pipe.
160 degree t-stat
Dual snorkel air cleaner.
Factory rail rockers converted to be adjustalbe.

Test done with a 3 x 14" K&N aircleaner

Combo will require 89 to 92 octane pump gas depending on C/R
Chassis dyno numbers are 454 pound feet @ 1,500 RPM and 260 RWHP at 4,500

Ported heads are worth 20 HP as are headers. This is a high torque stump pulling combo.

Try this combo

.030 over stock block
9.5 CR with port matching, bowl blending, and minor porting
750 CFM vac secondary carb
Weiand Stealth intake
Crane Powermax hyd roller 311-2S-12
Long tube headers with primaries in the 1-3/4" to 2" range

Here's the numbers Desktop Dyno comes up with...

RPM Torque / HP

2000 211 / 555
2500 268 / 563
3000 325 / 569
3500 384 / 576
4000 437 / 574
4500 481 / 561
5000 505 / 530
5500 501 / 479
6000 473 / 413

And just to make things interesting, heres the exact same combo applied to 514 cubes (like you get in the Ford Motorsport 514 shortblock).

RPM Torque / HP

2000 236 / 621
2500 297 / 624
3000 356 / 623
3500 414 / 621
4000 463 / 607
4500 494 / 577
5000 499 / 524
5500 475 / 453
6000 428 / 374

Happy Motoring!

Ooops, I got the Torque / HP labels backwards (wardsback?) in the above thread and it won't let me edit it to correct.

Sorry!

I'm looking to get power like that from my 460..

Anyone know how to ID a cam without tearing the engine apart?

I bought the engine/c6 tranny from a guy taking it out of one sweet 68 stang fastback.

Things I know

1. C8VE Heads, 10.5:1 cr, D1VE block.
2. TCI converter, 2500 stall
3. Edelbrock Torker II intake (single plane)
4. Holley carb, think 750cfm.
5. Nice headers

I 'think' the manifold and converter tell me 2500- up, which sort of matches with the Comp Cams - Ford 429, 460 Xtreme 4x4 X4270H Cam

I just rolled back from the dyno, '77 4x4 with a 460/C6, 4:11's and 33x12.5's. I made 350HP and 500 ft./lbs of torque at the rear wheels. '77 block 60 over, 10.5 milled TRW's on Eagle SIR rods, DOVE C heads ported and larger valves, COMP valvetrain and 294 solid cam, Edelbrock Performer RPM with 1" spacer and 850 Demon. Stan's Tri-y headers with 2.5" dual exhaust through flowmasters. With the low ratio gear set in the tranny the truck really launches and screams to over 6 grand. Not the most sedate vehicle but what a fun toy.

77460,

As a test agains a known value I ran your setup through Destop Dyno. I cam up with the following crank HP/Torque numbers.

RPM HP / Torque
2000 231 / 606
2500 283 / 595
3000 340 / 595
3500 391 / 587
4000 429 / 563
4500 452 / 527
5000 452 / 475
5500 427 / 408
6000 379 / 331

Corrected using a 22% driveline loss that comes out to theoretical rear wheel max numbers of 352 HP and 473 lb-ft torque. Darned close to what you actually made at the dyno! I'm glad to see that the error was an under estimation of actual torque and not the opposite.

Wow! Amazing how far software has come. Big torque is the answer for launching 5200lbs of truck. Thanks for the numbers Brad.

Are 9:1 or 9.5:1 compression ratios too high for pulling a trailer (travel trailer)? Assuming high torque/RV cam.

Thanks.

The biggest thing with the D/D's is headflow numbers... the computer will guesstimate close, but with accurate flow numbers, its almost dead on, as for the 9.5:1 pulling a trailer, there should be no problems at all there
